Trego got my #1, and I agree 100%, that was THE single biggest upset in NASCAR history.
My 3:
1. Alan Kulwiki over Bill Elliott in 1992. Had Bill Elliott led 1 more lap in the last race of the season, he would have been the 1992 NWC champion by 10 points over Alan Kulwiki. Don't forget that Mark Martin and Davey Allison were also capable of winning the championship that year right up until the last few laps of the last race.....
2. Derrick Cope over Dale Earnhardt in the 1990 Daytona 500. Another classic Earnhardt Daytona Disappointment.....
3. Kevin Harvick over Mark Martin in the 2007 Daytona 500. What else needs said about that race?

Wow Robby Gordon? He's won other races and can drive and win in any kind of car. How about this for consideration: Alan Kulwicki the 1992 Winston Cup Champion! He came out of nowhere with his own race team and beat big dogs Bill Elliot, racing for Junior Johnson, and Davey Allison, for Robert Yates. He needed a provisional to make the Daytona 500 that year, finished fourth and the run was on. And he was still 30 points out entering the last race. For races though this is my list:
3. Rookie Ron Bouchard at Talladega August 2, 1981 (his only win in his 11th start)
2.Jamie McMurray
1. Derrike Cope.

The three biggest upsets in NASCAR history.
Mine are:
1. 2003 Darlington 500- with the closest finish in NASCAR history ricky craven and Kurt Busch
2. 2006 UAW ford 500- Dale jr. and Jimmie Johnson out in front and then Jimmie Johnson's teammate Brian Vickers wrecks both Dale jr and Jimmie Johnson on the last lap.
3. 2007 DAYTONA 500-last lap coming out of turn 4 Kyle Busch (Kurt Busch's little brother) get areo loose and clips the 17 car Matt Kensith and then the big one happened out on the tri oval but then at the line the 01 of Mark Martain and the 29 Kevin Harvick go side by side for the win. And Kevin Harvick win by 0.002 of a second!

I have to agree with some of the others: Alan Kulwicki winning the championship, Harvick winning two weeks after Earnhardt's death, McMurray winning in his 3rd (I think) start. But wasn't there a year or two in the 80s or 90s when the championship was won by just a few points and/or not by the points leader going into the final race?

JGRacing: I have bad news, but Jr was in competition for rookie of the year, and was 2nd to Matt Kenseth.
1: Daytona 98
2. Ricky Craven, Kurt Busch, Darlington, March 16, 2003
3. Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Atlanta, March 11, 2001

1) Dale Earnhardt's February 18, 2001
2) Alan Kulwiki April 1, 1993
3) Kenny Irwin July 7, 2000
And frankly anyother driver killed on the race track, would be a far greater upset than, Dale Not winning the 500, or McMurray winning in his second start, or Martin losing the 500 to Harvick, to me life is much more precious than who beat who by .001 seconds in the 2007 Daytona 500, to forget the most upsetting moments in NASCAR history.

I would have to say Harvick winning the Daytona 500. I like Harvick, but the caution should have been waved and Martin should have won.
