I have bipolar and depression loves to kick in around the start of Fall. My meds help me but my therapist really helps, because I feel safe enough to tell her what is really going on with me. Almost everyday I get the hopeless feeling and well financial situations can almost make that a reality. With any problem however you have to slow down the thought process a bit and ground yourself. When I feel like Im going to give up it really helps to know that I am connected to at least one person who understands me. So I hope you have someone you can talk to who really understands how you feel and also someone who gets what depression really is and that its not a 9 to 5er but a 24/7 event that just never seems to end sometimes. Im sure you can think positive and anyone can as long as they have the energy to do so. Try talking with a counselor and doc so you can figure out what steps you need to take to function better. Things will get better a lil at a time.

The best "how to" book on the subject I think is THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING by norman vincent peale. Any library should have a copy. You Can't Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought has been suggested to me too.
The short version is that how we feel is dependent on what thoughts we think. People can talk themselves into being sick or depressed, so why not the opposite?
Tell yourself 20 times a day "Things will work out for the best if I just let things unfold." That works for me. Another good one for religious people is "If God is for us, who can be against us?" When you start to think something negative, STOP IT by thinking a positive phrase.
It sounds simple, but the things that work best usually are.

Honestly the only thing that got rid of mine was meds. I have been on and off them for seven years and try to push it away when I am not on them but as soon as the fall approches I find myself getting depressed. Myself, having two little children, I cannot be depressed at any point so the best solution for me was meds. Meds aren't for everyone but sometimes you just need them. I always had this feeling that I couldn't shake and hated it. Also if you are on any type of hormone like birth control, you should get off it, hormones do funny things with your body and sometimes might lead to depression or funny feelings.

Hopeless is attacked with hope.
Practical action for hopelessness.
1. set small goals and meet them:
Tell yourself- Ok, I am going to go to a park and walk completely around the path. Do it. Tell yourself- Hey , great I set out to do that and did it.
Tell yourself- For my next trick, I am going to pick out a get together group event (hike, bike, canoe, camp, etc ad infinium), go to that (whatever it is) and do it.
Tell yourself- Hey this is better than I thought, next I'm going to take some certificate in something (Red Cross course, adult education course at a community college, a simple computer certificate, a writing class for adults, an EMT basic course, etc) get that certificate and get a nice box and put it in the box. Do it. Say that makes me feel good to put a certificate in the box, I'll do some other one.
2. Fill up-Go where there is hope taught every week: Church.
Where is the hope taught? The Bible is filled with direct instruction from God Almighty on His love for you and purpose for your life.
Attend a Church that teaches the Bible, Sunday School that teaches the Bible, and Bible Study that does the same.
You get injected with God's words of hope and do so with loving folk to boot. That is all up side, positive.
3. Exercise- You are in training for hope, do a Rocky.
Put on comfortable walking shoes, comfortable walking attire, you are suiting up.
WALK- do it by the clock, distance doesn't matter.
Suit up in your version of Rocky and walk 15 minutes by the clock- time it.
It doesn't matter how much distance you cover, 50 feet or 500 yards, you are setting a goal of walking for 15 minutes and accomplishing that goal.
After you do that until you feel good with 15 minutes you can add 5 minutes, after a week or two. Keep at it and make it a habit, suiting up, walking and showering after doesn't take long.
Before long you will feel like Rocky, or whatever other Character you chose.
4. Nutrition: You are in training for Hope
Plate lunch food- one meat, one green and one yellow vegetable, salad. Get at least one plate lunch meal a day, best is traditional breakfast with plate lunch noon and dinner. (if you cannot afford to go to a cafeteria get balanced tv dinners and salad fixins)
Vitamins: daily
500mg of B12
one tab of B Complex
one multi-vitamin with minerals and trace elements
Cut all junk foods
5. Output- Turn on your hope radar- look for something you can do for a total stranger every day
If a bum comes up to hit your for spare change, whip out some change carried just for him, not in purse or wallet, and tell him God Bless You, and walk on.
If you see a child smile and wave.
If you can open a door, jump in and help someone with their hands full, give directions or.....
Offer a word of encouragement to a total stranger in passing
Do it.
"Give and it shall be given to you a full measure pressed down and overflowing shall come unto your bosom."
That is a spiritual law, just like gravity is a physical law.
You give hope, love, happiness to others, you receive it back and much more than you gave.
6. Temporary life ring- Having stated how you can fight back,
if you are overwhelmed and unable to put one foot in front of the other to start 1., you will benefit from the medicines prescribed by your physician for depression. You do not sound like a candidate for electro-therapy.
Then apply the steps above and get past the antidepressant medicine as soon as you and the doctor can do so. They all have their drawbacks and side effects and are nothing to use for life.

getting daily exercise, proper sleep and a little sunshine (early in the day) is a good start. If you have symptoms that these won't cure, please see a doctor. Depression is a serious disease that you just can't will to go away. Good luck to you.
