Yesterday I was dropping my girls off at daycare and I saw this elderly man laying on the ground next to the curb. There was a wheel chair next to him so I asked him if he needed help. He told me yeah so I helped him get into his chair and he was shaking really bad so I called the paramedics and waited with him until they came. The man was 76 years old no family to speak of and he had been laying their because he had fallen out his chair during a seizure (is that how you spell that?)
He had been there all night long this is a very busy street he was on and I stopped and helped him at 6:30 am. That means hundreds of people passed him by.
What the heck is wrong with human beings? I mean how would you feel if your grandfather was laying somewhere helpless for hours and hours?
How many of you would really and I mean be honest with yourself would really stop to help a person in need? Keep in mind I was on my way to work and ended up being 20 mintues late. How many would do that?

Good for you to help someone else. I think people just don't want to get involved. They have things that need to be done and some just worry about themselves. it is sometimes hard to know when you should step in though. I was driving home one day down a busy street and I saw an elderly woman in a wheel chair talking to this woman that looked like a crack head. Well the woman started arguing with the elderly woman and slapped her right in the face with people driving by and walking right by her! I couldn't believe that people just witnessed that and did nothing about it. I was already too far away to honk or anything but I saw that and was horrified. What has this world come to.

Yeah that's tough. Maybe the folks thought that he was a drunk street person or something. I would've seriously thought that. Then again, the wheel chair was beside em.

Once I found an old man laying down on the side walk at 12:00 noon. I did the same thing that you did. I got out of my car to help him out. I even walked him back to his apartment. I called the paramedics too. When they got there, I was so embarrassed because they told me that the dude was drunk! I didn't even realize it!

Anyway we need to look out for our fellow man. That's for sure.

While Tony has a point, I don't think you meant your question in the way he thinks you did.

People are still as concerned about others as they have been forever, the only difference is that now there are fears/misconceptions.

You saw an ailing old man, but perhaps everyone else saw a drunken bum/a homeless guy looking for attention.

It's very possible this old man was asleep/something to that affect before you came to him.

How many people wake sleeping homeless men?

You need to understand that perception is our reality and what you perceived as a problem (and turned out to be) others may have not seen the same way.

People are pretty insensitive to the plight of others. A while back I was crossing a busy street that had lights. I had already crossed and on the other side was an elderly blind man (he had a white cane) asking people if he could get some help. No one stopped, I couldn't believe it so helped him myself. Too sad. He actually wanted to thank me by buying me a coffee and if I hadn't been working I'd have probably taken him up on it.

i thought most people would at least call 911.

I am also in a w/c and I feel once on a public street. I was lucky that a person called 911 and they came and helped me. I do not know who called. Maybe they called from their car. It just takes a minute to call. You are a really good person as you took the trouble to help him personally. Remember the Bible story about the neighbor?

I think that people's concern is for their personal safety because of the pattern of people pretending to be ill or needing help, and then robbing or injuring those who offer help. I would think, though, that someone would call the paramedics to investigate the situation. They are better trained and equipped to handle situations where someone's health seems to be impaired, too.

Good for you, you did the right thing.

As people pass by these situations, they're only adding to the problems in our society.

Hopefully somebody saw what you did and helped someone else later that day.

We shouldn't do good things to seek praise from others. We should do good things to seek praise from God.

I did something very similar, actually pulled over, jumped out of my car and helped a man that was slowly sliding out of his wheelchair. Yes, to answer your question, there are still those of us that will be the good samaritan, but I think our numbers are dwindling at times.
