do you think it is wrong for an athiest couple to marry in a church to make their families happy?

Absolutely ridiculous. Pastors marry people all the time as part of their job description, and they even marry people outside their own faiths, acting as God's ambassador to contribute God's perspective on the institution and to uphold God's mandate that marriage is God's program, not man's.

However, marrying unbelievers in alternate venues is the typical way to address the problem of unbelievers. To bring them into a church would be problematic, even if they are willing to submit to the pastor's sermonette about why God ordains marriage. Some pastors may see this as a venue to reach those in attendance, but this is sketchy at best. I'd say that for avowed atheists to hypocritically marry in a church is beneath the dignity of the church. God will not be mocked, the Bible says, and I think no minister should perform such a wedding in his own house of God where he ministers. These people should marry in Vegas or go to a justice of the peace, or find a park and have the pastor simply give them the legal vows. At least a man of God can get a word or two in about God's plan for couples that they might later remember.
