Canines are social animals. He may be looking for a friend. Dogs also look for fun things to do; he may be looking for food, or for something with which to play. In the wild, Wolves have been known to travel 50 miles or more in a day. He may be getting some exercise. Dogs like to know what is going on around them. He is just looking to see if there is any entertainment available.
Or, he could be doing long math problems, trying to find the highest prime number, or trying to figure out how to round up all the cats and send them to the moon.
Get him a buddy; another dog to play with, and let them outside in a fenced area.

Just patrolling his home territory to make sure he is the "top dog" there. If he is rubbing his face on the furniture or on the carpet is is marking his territory. They have glands around their eyes that will leave a scent where they rub. They also do other things to mark their territory such as urinate or defecate around their home area. However, if the puppy is trained, he will give this up unless your bring in another animal that is really threatening to him then he will revert to marking his territory in this way.

hes scouting his terrirtory and seeing if he can find anything...in terms of possibly mice instects or whatever else could be wondering in your home. Just make sure to take the dog outside every 4-5 hrs during the day. And hes just curious so nothing to worry about.

He's checking the exterior for a possible escape route...
Okay, I think they take inventory, like you said, make sure everything and everyone is accounted for. Making sure other dogs didn't trespass, things like that.

Is he sniffing the baseboards? You could have rats or mice in the walls that he's noticing. Jack Russels, in particular, are good at that.
