I adopted a 3 month old puppy about 2 weeks ago. She was already paper trained. At first she rarely went anywhere else in my house than on her pad. Now it seems like she's starting to go on the carpet in other rooms of my house. She still goes on her pad too. It's like a half and half thing. What could make her start to un-housebreak herself? How do I get her back on track?

first off DON'T punish. Dogs cannot associate the act of going with the mess on the floor. If you punish rub nose in it you will make the dog think that you are angry at the MESS she made not the fact that she went on your carpet. She will become fearful of going in front of you because she will think you will get angry at the mess. If you want to set your housebreaking back then by all means go ahead.

Take her outside hourly, put her leash on and walk her in circles, use a command word, potty time, tee tee whatever you want to use, say this as she is circling so she begins to associate that word with outside, when she pees, praise her really well and give her a treat, then repeat till she poops praise and reward.

Keep her confined in the kitchen or a crate, do not allow her the run of the house she cannot be trusted. Make sure you've cleaned up the spot she goes really well, if she can even smell a little bit of her poop or urine it will encourage her to go. That's why you must take them to the same place in the yard each time, if they can smell their urine outside it will encourage them to go. if you catch her in the act of squatting, clap your hands and say OUTSIDE. Pick up and take out side immediately to finish, if she does go reward and praise.

Eventually she will associate going outside with eliminating. make sure when she goes outside to eliminate that's what she does, don't let her play around if she does bring her back inside and recrate, then try again 10 mins later.

You don't want to paper train because what you are telling the puppy is it's ok to go to the bathroom inside, that's one of the reasons she goes on the rug because you've allowed her to get used to going inside. Paper training should only be used for when you go out and can't be back in time to let them out. It should never be a training method, it's too confusing to the dog, ok I'm allowed to poop in the kitchen why not the living room, your bedroom etc.

Be consistent when you take her outside, don't keep changing how you do things it's confusing to a dog, reward and praise so she knows what she did is what you want. Ignore when she does have an accident, dogs are not fully trustworthy until a year old, confine to one area of the house like the kitchen, do not allow to roam unattended. If you have to be in other parts take puppy with you on a leash and hook her to you. Look for signs that she needs to go out, sniffing ground, circling. Take out every hour to pee. 30 mins after each meal to poop, every time they wake up, finish playing etc.

Good luck, and whatever you do, don't punish it will make housebreaking harder, remember dogs don't rationalize, they will look guilty if they have an accident it's because they know you're going to get mad at the mess they made, thats why some dogs hide it so you wont' be angry. Train with positive reinforcement, it works so much better.

You're going to need to buy a crate and begin crating the canine at any time when you aren't residence or cannot notice him thoroughly. Set a schedule for feeding and potty breaks. It is a just right thought to restrict water after a detailed time of the day so that your dog does not ought to go overnight. Does the dog simplest go when excited? Then, it can be no longer truly a predicament with housebreaking, but what's known as submissive urination. The dog loses manipulate of its bladder. If you have not already, take the canine to the vet and make certain that there aren't any medical problems inflicting the canine to head within the residence. Otherwise, the crate should do the trick. If you happen to've simply very lately got this dog, it would just be the change of circumstances. He often simply desires a refresher course at eight yrs. Historic. Good good fortune!

Some dogs just regress a little before moving forward, like kids do sometimes... just place her outside about every 2-3 hours, and especially after meals or waking up... as most dogs will always have to relieve themselves after these times. Another way to do it, it crate train them... dogs learn not to use the bathroom where they sleep.... place the dog in a pen large enough for the dog and a bed when you aren't carefully supervising, and let the dog out often. One more way is to place the paper that the dog is using to go to the bathroom on, closer and closer to the door every few days and eventually out the door. Hope this helps, but have patience.... to be honest, the dog is not even housebroke to begin with if it's just going on a paper inside... housebroke is holding the bladder, poo until let outside. Good luck with this and I hope what I've typed will give you an idea on how to get your new puppy housebroken!! :-)

I'm having the same problem, except I don't have my puppy on paper or pads. I'm trying to crate train my puppy, and since dogs will not use the bathroom in the same place that they sleep, we put her in there at night and when we are gone. When we take her outside, we give her a treat IMMEDIATELY after using the bathroom. I'm hoping that she will start to learn that outside is good, inside is BAD! :)

By the way, I don't know who you are going to pick as best answer, but I definitely suggest using hj_thorne's ideas. I know I will. That helped me A LOT!

Well, how often are you changing the paper? If it isn't every time (and right away), the puppy might not want to go there.

Are you also taking the puppy there every few hours to specifically do what needs to be done? If you aren't specifically taking the dog there, she might not be making the connection that that is where she needs to be going.

Be sure to reward her after she goes on the paper as well (and, of course, don't scold her if you catch her going elsewhere, just clap or some such to distract her then take her to the paper).

You need to take away the pad and take her outside. Its the best way. Whats happening is that your dog is thinking its ok to go inside, once the dog goes inside once, it will keep doing it. You will need to start training your dog off the pad. I suggest getting a good potty training book at Petsmart. There are several methods that will work quickly (too much to write here). Good luck.

With my puppies I wasn't able to use pee pads because they just wanted to tear them up. I kept the food up until it was their feeding time and then I would take them out about 30 min. after they ate to use the bathroom. The only way I could get mine to quit using #2 in the house was to praise them by saying either, "Goody Potty", or "Good Poopy". and would give them treats when they came inside as an incentive. When they stopped doing #1 in the house I focused my attention on #2. It worked for me, but I did have to adjust my strategy for each dog. Good luck.

Throw out the pads, buy a crate and start teaching her to go outside.
