Most car dealers only allow you to test drive with a salesman for a ride or two. Due to insurance and thefts.

Most will allow you to drive it for 20 mins or so. If it is a new car, they may try to limit the total number of miles on the car to 100 or less because qualifying the car for a lease is much more difficult (at least with GM). If they think you are a good prospect they may let you have the car overnight. The last car I bought was from my best buddy who is a GM General Manager and I had the car for a week, but that is an exception.

An hour should do it. Make a list of things you want to check as you drive. A salesman will be with you so be loaded with questions. Drive it on a smooth paved road and change to a rough paved road to check th handling, braking, and shifting charistics of the car. Try the air conditioner, wipers, heater, radio and most of all are you comfortable behind the wheel. Drive it in town and fast on a four lane highway.

a 'normal' test drive is 10 - 15 minutes as remember, a car may be test driven 4- 5 times, and they dont want a lot of miles on the car.
some dealers, if they think you are serious and need a bit of swaying, will let you keep the car overnight (as long as you keep it under a certain # of total miles driven)

They do not tell you to only be gone a certain amount of time. They try to make you think a "once around the block" is good. I take them for as long as it takes to determine whether it will serve my needs and performs the way I expect it should. I drive it up hills, winding roads, at freeway speeds...whatever it takes. You are the one making the purchase. Don't let them rush you.
