you and your dog need to go to school. A basic obedience class does wonders- will teach you how to properly correct your dogs behavior. Will also show your mom that you are committed to this dog and willing to do the work to teach her the right things. I would recommend a local obedience club or dog club that offers training classes- I have had better experience there than at Petco/Petsmart which doesn't necessarily have bad trainers, but its often just a "job".

Added: If this is a sudden change in her behavior (ie, she used to love everyone, now she growls and snarls at them) I would take her in for a check up first- pain or illness can cause radical shift in disposition. If she has always been this way, stay with the obedience class.

What kind of dog is it? Some breeds growl a lot, especially smaller dogs.. I agree training is in order. If the cost is out of the question, check with your vet, some local Humane Society's offer very affordable obedience schools. Good Luck! Also, try socializing your dog as much as possible, walking on a leash around a lot of people.

First of all What type or kind of a dog is she or he? I have two shi tziu's and this is their teritory (domain, home property)! Both of my small dogs (female) growl when someone strange enters their domain. Let the people entering your home spend a couple of minutes with you and the dog .Once the dog sees that it is ok for whomever to be there then they should settle down. My dogs do nort allow hitting or angry movements in our home. This means none. If I playfully hit my wife or daughter they both growl at me and are poised to jump and protect them from me. No matter who instigates the offender is wrong. I am not a pro, but I have owned all types of dogs throughout my life. All dogs protect their own. Once they figure out that they no longer have to defend their territory, then the growling should stop. However, you and your family need to put your foot down if, after the dog knows that things are ok, if the growling does not stop. always remember, they are in charge only for as long as you allow them to be. You must sometimes show them that you and other people in your household are the boss.

My dog doesn't do well around strangers either. She was always socialized. She has just never been much for them. I'm looking into classes. Try to slowly introduce her to your friends and family members. My dog gets used to people after the third visit. Then she's always happy to see them! It bothers me so much that I can't take her for walks because she barks and growls. She's afraid of them, cause if they bark back.. She runs! She's like an 80 lb dog.. I met another person with the same mix of breeds (shepherd & hound) and they have the same problem. So it may just be your dog's dispostion. If you have a pet smart by you, they have classes. Rescues can always point you in the right direction for classes and behavior altering techniques. Good Luck!

Basic obedience will help somewhat. But, this is an aggressive behavior that needs to be corrected. A professional dog trainer and/or animal behaviorist will be in a better position to help with this and any other aggressive behavior. Please consult a professional before this behavior escalates.

You need to socialize your dog. Did you get her as a pup or fully grown? A dog's history has a lot to do with their attitudes.
Also, a dog will pick up clues from you on how to react to people. If you are uneasy around them, your dog will probably feel the same way.
