I have just taken some chicken breast back to my butchers as there was a smell emanating off it- he claimed all chicken smells like that? I have never prepared chicken that has a smell to it- is he correct and it can smell(its like an eggy smell-not pleasant at all) or is he talking rubbish- if he is I am going to the enviromental health.
I have smelt really off chicken-it is vomit inducing- its not that bad ,but it doesnt smell good.

Fresh chicken breast shouldn't smell. Call up environmental health - you do have reason to be concerned.

And bin the chicken you bought from him.

Everything has its own smell - fresh chicken smells but it should have a light odour only noticeable when you sniff it closely. If it has a stronger smell it is off and is only fit for them bin. If your nose gives reason to have doubts - bin it and report it to environmental health. The chicken you bought won't be any use as evidence unless you keep it, have evidence of where and when you bought it, can prove you stored it correctly and they are willing to check it out immediately but they may investigate the butcher's general practise.
Whatever you do - don't eat it. Rancid poultry is dangerous.

Well maybe something isn't quite right with it,as it's a Friday and it's almost the weekend so their stock might not be coming in until Monday so not to be rude bu these are the left overs of the ones from the bottom of the 'packet' which they are selling to you.I think there will always be a light smell but nothing sort of fierce, maybe it could be the condition they were in aswell i.e to hot so tis was what was causing this aroma.

Yes! but you might not be able to sense it because your nose is not tuned to the very delicate smell. Your dog will smell it from a mile off! Of course, if you keep it long enough the odour will eventually
reach your nostrils and wrinkle your nose. It would seem that if you can detect an unpleasant whiff from it, the chicken will have been dead rather too long. Your butcher should talk to his supplier and not argue with you about it.

it depends on whether the chicken was in a tray with a film seal.
i have bought chicken this way and it does have a certain niff to it as the chicken gives off gasses which are trapped by the clear seal.
once it is washed it should not whiff.
i dont think you should be hot footing it to the enviromental,im sure it was a genuine mistake if it was going off.

the second fresh chicken smells anything but nice it is bad stuff. It should smell of fresh meat, iodine blood smell.

The butcher needs a vist from enviromental services.

Oooooh no, not that kind of smell. It's usually pretty neutral (ish). Sometimes some meat has a"gamey" sort of smell. I think you were right to check it out.

Never take chances with meat or fish..it's better to be safe than sorry.

Ps You did wash your hands (everything you touched and surfaces etc)...didn't you?

No. I am assuming you smell it normally without having to put your nose up to it. Just like fish, it should not smell stinky when raw.
