I live in london, a multicultural city,
so why oh why do I have to make an extra trip to an afro-caribbean grocer if I want to buy plantain?

so very annoying!

(mind you its probably heaps cheaper than a supermarket would charge!)

Supermarkets are there to make money and nothing else. Foods like plantain that are unusual and don't appeal to the mass market and would lose them money. It's not a criticism - it's just a fact of their business.
I think markets need more support in this country - it might not be so easy but carry on supporting them and you'll get better quality produce than you'll ever get in a supermarket - and cheaper to.

Stores carry what sells. Many of our local stores carry plantain, and our city is a lot smaller than London.

Ask for it, or try a different store locally.

Really? I can get plantains everywhere around here. On the rare occasions when I haven't seen them, I just ask one of the produce workers and they show me where to go.

Lol well sometimes there are small markets in shopping centres or if you go down to the end of the road and try small stools ,I haven't gone out of my way looking for them there but maybe they don't see them as a popular food item such as apples or chips,so stack them away or only get them in small demands, maybe you could try requesting them at your nearest Asda,Sainsburrys,Tesco's or even Somerfield, and they might start briging some/more in,I tried this with this Sandwich that they stopped selling at one of my nearest Sainsburys and they brought it in lol.

They've actually started selling plantains in ASDA. They also sell cassava, mooli, chillies, scotch bonnets and sweet potatoes, which are great because, like you said, I haven't got to make a special trip to an ethnic shop to get them.

Our local supermarkets carry them and I'm in a city of about 65,000 in the states. Ask you market to carry them. They may not realize people want them if you don't speak up.
