Humans are highly social creatures. Many people don't like to admit it, but we all depend on others for support, security, safety, companionship and many other things. No person--other than a total hermit--can really afford to be completely disinterested in what other people think. But being obsessed with what other people think--to the exclusion of knowing oneself--isn't healthy either.
It is a balancing act. We need to be self-sufficient, but we also need to recognize the importance of other people in our lives. Leaning too far in either direction will cause problems.
Me personally? I have my own opinions and I do the things that seem right to me, but I discuss important matters with my close friends to make sure I'm not missing any important details and to make sure that my views "make sense".
I can deal with having some people "not like" me, but if everyone hated me, I would take that as a clue that there was probably something I should change about myself. I don't want to live in isolation, so I do try to get people to like me. There are limits as to what I will do to get people to like me and some people get a kick out of testing those limits and making unreasonable demands on others. It is always up to me to decide what I will do to "get along" and what is too much for me.
This is a very important question that you will probably ask yourself many times throughout your life and each time you will probably have a different variation on the answer. That's life. Every moment requires choices. I recommend keeping your choices in proper balance. YOU are important and other people are important too.

For most of us there is a varying degree of concern with how others perceive us. This helps serve society is that we are kept in check so to speak and are mindful of how our actions will be interpreted by other.

Personally I value the opinions of my close friends and family- but I still occasionally worry about how I appear to others.

It's more important what I think about myself. You are the only person who knows how you really are.

Not really, I try to treat people with respect and i am generally a friendly person, if I know that I have behaved in a good way then I don't care if people don't like me, you can't expect everyone in life to like you

What is important is what you think of yourself.

People have been judging each other for thousands of years... and what other people think isn't important.

take care of YOU.

In most cases no but there are certain exceptions. For instance if you're going to a job interview you dress nice, you are trying to put out a certain image (you care what they think).

Absolutely not. As long as you are happy with who you are that is all that matters. God did not create robots, we are all different.
