My dog, newly named "Houdini", keeps getting out of his wire crate....he's about 14 pounds so I doubt he fits through the holes. When I get home all the doors in the crate are still locked but he is running-at-large around the house...Does anyone have a dog that does this? I've heard of them unlocking the cage door themselves, but unless he gets out, turns around, and re-locks the door, I don't know.

Yup, dogs can very easily get out of wire crates.. NEVER leave them in there with their collars on.. You should get a plastic kennel.. Wire crates are meant only for housetraining, not to leave the dogs unattended or unsupervised.. That's what the company told me when I wrote them complaining that my dogs got out of them so easily.

He probably crawls out the opening where the pan slides in and out. This can be cured with zip ties.
I have an 8 mos old Bernese b*tch who uses her tongue to open the slide latches.... gotta love smart dogs.
Greekman.. I've had dogs destroy airline crates. Samoyeds are escape artists. Often they figure out the can pop the door if they just put their shoulder into it... and I know of one Samoyed who died by pulling the door in with his teeth... he got the top latch undone.. and tried to crawl through the opening, got stuck and gutted himself. Airline crates can be made safe from this by drilling a small hole top and bottom by the door and then zip tying the door to the plastic.

I had a dog that I had to lock all of my doors with the key due to the fact he would open the doors, and walk right outside. You can try setting up a camera just to see how he does it. Or if you can, try leaving , but not leave, and if you can see through a window at him?

Your best bet is to watch him get out. You may have a weak spot somewhere between panels or something.
My lab had me puzzled last summer. He kept getting out of the outdoor run. I checked all the fencing, doors, no holes dug under it. I was at a loss. I finally just put him in the run, went inside and waited. Apparently he can jump a six foot fence.

Dogs can be very smart. Try to see if you can catch him in the act. What type of crate is it? http://www.columbineanimal.com/

He has to be squeezing through the door opening. Try getting some snaps to hold the door shut.

It sounds like his crate is too big for him. You should consider either getting a smaller one or getting one of the travel kinds by Pet Mate.

try putting him in there when you are home and watch him until he does get out. You need to figure this out because he could be squeezing through something that one day could get stuck and get hurt.
Did he do any damage when he was out? If not then don't use the crate.

maybe you should set up a video camera. some how my dog has figured out how to slid the pan on the bottom completely out of it, whill she's still inside, and that part has to be unhinged too!
but yeah, i doubt you're dog is relocking it, but it would be very amusing to see if he is!

Get an airline crate, they are a lot safer and dogs cannot get out of them...
