I had the radioactive iodine treatment about 14 months ago. Other than quick weight-gain while my doctor figured out how much synthroid was appropriate, no side affects whatsoever. I lost over 50 pounds when I had the hyperthyroid and put back about 65 after, but am now near my original weight.

Some thyroid disorders can be cured, but many require lifetime treatment. Learn here https://tr.im/JcqX2
For example, sometimes early stage thyroid cancer can be cured by surgery to remove the thyroid gland, but you will need to take thyroid hormone medication afterwards for the rest of your life. Goiters can also be surgically removed and do not always recur after surgery. In most cases, thyroid disorders need treatment over a lifetime. However, with treatment most people with thyroid disorders can live normal, healthy lives.

Had the radio-iodine treatment back in June. Initially the over-active symptoms worsened, I read its due to the iodine gathering in your thyroid therefore releasing more into your blood stream.
I had to have an extra 6 weeks off before my GP allowed me to go back to work. And it was very hard to stay away from people for the 3 weeks after - I think I spent most of that time at home feeling sorry for myself - I just blamed it on the symptoms though!!
When I went back to the hospital the treatment had worked as it had brought my thyroid levels down. But now I am under-active and have the associated symptoms with it - feeling cold, puttin on weight, headaches, pins and needles etc, so am now on 100mg of thyroxine every day.
Am goin back to the hospital in 3 weeks to check levels again - its a case of fiddling with the dosage to get the right level.
Good luck with the treatment.xx

I have a friend who had his thyroid removed due to cancer, so the outcome is the same - no working thyroid and the need for medication. Mostly he does OK, but sometimes the dosage of his medication gets off and he gets tired and lethargic. It does seem that it takes time to get the dosage dialed in to a good place in the couple of people I've known who have gone through it.
