I am a waitress and served a family of born again baptists. As a tip, I recieved a bible. The whole time they were odd and very silent and the children were ignored. It was very surreal. Don't they realize that I work for the tip? Not for god?? So, here's my question,

Why is it that all of you religious people look down upon people who are atheist or agnostic, you preach all about loving thy neighbor but yet we don't feel your love, just your hatred and closed-mindedness. We don't need your pity or your prayers, we just look for respect. The same kind of respect we give to you. I swear jesus-lovers preach and preach and preach about love and respect but in reality they are all just a bunch of hypocrits. As soon as they meet a homosexual, or a non-traditional family they go bonkers. Why can't everyone just co-exist? And personally, if you can't leave a tip consisting of money, don't go out at all.

My opinions aren't solely based on my waitress expierience, its based on everyday expieriences too. I know a lot of religious people, my boyfriend is even a conservative catholic, the point is respect. I respect you but don't let your beliefs DROWN me. The people that answered my questions like the common brain-washed religious FREAK, yeah i didn't want to call names but read it again. RESPECT is all that i'm talking about. Please don't judge my servicing skills because I am nice to all that treat me well just as you should be. Practice what you preach for crying out loud.

I knew that I was going to get answers from very different people.
For people that were wondering how I knew that they were born again baptists THE BIBLE SAID IT
no, they didn't have a sticker on them that is simply ridiculous

Also in the BORN AGAIN BAPTIST bible that was titled BORN AGAIN BAPTIST with little cards and stuff saying that the next coming is about to arrive. its been centuries and they are still waiting.

Anyways.... how can u people say i'm selfish for wanting a tip? You've got to be kidding me... tell me that you work for free. I'm going to college and i'm sorry that i need money to pay for books and food. That is probably the dumbest responses i have gotten

You are a waitress. I am in retail sales. I am a Christian, don't know if you are or not. None of my beeswax anyways.

However, we both work for the public. There are a lot of unbalanced ignorant people out there. It would seem totally idiotic of them to leave you a Bible as a tip, maybe they meant well, maybe not. Maybe they gave you all they had left. Who knows? At least they gave you something.

How would you have felt if you had gotten no tip at all? When I eat out, which is often, if I get good service I leave a good tip. If I get bad service I leave a small tip. I don't remember when the service was so bad that I left no tip at all. I know that I have been tempted at times not to. That is what tips are all about: To Insure Promptness. They are not a gimme for you. Nor are they something anyone is obligated to give you. It is a gratuity, not a tax.

If this is a problem for you.....find another job.

Edit: BTW, this is not "religious question" it is a rant because you didn't get a tip. Grow up.

Edit: Didn't that college require you to take a tolerance course? You have proven the point of every religious person who gave you an answer you didn't like. Again, grow up.

Edit: This really ticks me off. This whole "tip" thing started out because people felt they had to bribe severs to get adequate service. Today, employers avoid paying a decent wage by encouraging the practice of tipping. It has come to the point where it is a hidden tax, these people who wait on us, the barber, the hairdresser.....heck, doesn't anyone do a good job for the sake of doing a good job? What does tipping say? It says "My employer doesn't pay me enough so I am going to expect you to pick up the slack'. I am NOT your employer, make them pay the tips. We sure pay enough for the product! Once again, young lady, it is a gratuity, not a tax. If you want to collect taxes run for Congress.

BTW: how much does your employer gaurantee you per hour? How much of that does he expect you to make up in tips?

Couldn't we as Christians ask you the same thing? Where is our respect from you? I was a waitress too, all through college so I know the frustration of working for a tip! But you have to realize not all "religious people" are as you describe. For me, you are being closed-minded yourself saying that all of us are! And exactly how did you know the were born again baptist? You seem very angry and to tell the truth, is there a question in there or are you just venting? I don't pity you or have a problem with the way you live your life so why are you judging me? I have no problem with homosexuals, nor do I care if someone is in a "non-traditional" family. All religions are different and for you to sit at your little computer and type that all of us are the same, that makes you the biggest hypocrite of all! Hope I answered you question to the point where you understand, no one is the same. We all have different beliefs, different skin color and different ideas. If we were the same, how boring would that be?

LOL LOL LOL!!!!!! Like Christians don't tip. Where did that come from? I ALWAYS leave a very decent tip. You are generalizing and that is not ok. You are clumping many people together into a big basket. Not all the apples in that basket are bad. "we just look for respect. The same kind of respect we give to you". Read some of the loving answers that atheists give to Christians. I mean seriously, get a grip and face reality. You sound like a whiny victim and you guys are actually the bullies on the playground. You don't play well with others in the sandbox. Get real.

Is it mandatory to leave a tip in a US restaurant? I once went to a joint in NYC and the meal was so lousy that when the waitress came up and asked me how I liked my meal, I explained everything that was wrong with it, and that was why I wasn't leaving a tip. I think the restaurant business in the States is screwed. Why don't they just make the meal 10% more expensive, then give that 10% to the waitstaff. Why should they be penalised because some lazy cook out the back can't be bothered making a decent meal. Maybe they should give the customer a tip for having to endure such a horrible meal. That would be respectful.

Think it's gonna fly?

I didn't think so.

In my younger days, this happened to me too, I worked as a waitress to help pay my way thru nursing school. A group, presumably a family came in and were seated in my section. The man, presumably the father, was the only one that spoke and he ordered the meals for everyone. They ate, and when I did my check backs and offered further service the man said, "no, we have all we need, you need not inquire again".
They left a bible on the table when they left. I grabbed it and ran after them into the parking lot and told them "I think you left this by mistake, and if you did not, I appreciate the thought, but I have a bible, a very old very used bible to be sure, but it is mine, given to me by my mother's mother, keep this one". The man thanked me and turned to leave, and the woman put her hand on his shoulder and gave him such a look, he turned and handed me a five dollar tip. Back then, it was a very generous tip.

Leaving a bible as a "tip" was an insulting thing to do. I don't know how to analyze these folks. The Baptists in my area are going door-to-door these days, like JWs or Mormons, and I can't beleive the looks of shock and anger I get when I politely thank them and inform them that I am not a Christian. Apparently being of a different faith is highly insulting to these people.

I have been ostracized by my family because I am not a born-again evangelical Christian like them, so I know what you mean. If it was just me, I wouldn't care but when my daughter asked me why her grandparent's didn't love them like their "saved" cousins I knew I had to make a point. So at the last family gathering we attended I told them "Jesus loves us even if you don't but I'm going to practice what YOU preach and love and forgive you any way."

We have not been allowed in their home since. I often wonder what Bible they read.

OH man! First of all how do you know they were? Do they wear orange stickers with arrows saying LOOK AT ME I'M A BORN AGAIN BAPTIST! on their shirts?
I hate to use the words now, but I go to a Baptist Church and I believe with a passion. We went out for a meal on Tuesday night and I left a large tip (no I will not say how much but it was 15 per cent of the bill) - I have no idea if the waiter was a Christian or a Gaia worshiper - he was there to serve food to us..
My heart is torn for you, and for them. It is this kind of behavior in the little things in life which marks us all. If I ever get to your restaurant I hope I don't blow it that big - assuming the food is okay (I assume the service will be great). So on behalf of those of us who actually have a number of very close friends who are unbelievers, I offer my apologies for an on behalf of those who take His name but not His character.

I'm sorry......but not all baptist are like that and for you to group them together isn't right I live with my mind open to things I have family members who are gay and also imprison and I believe people have a right to live there life they want to with flipping out and I don't ignore my two kids. Plus to end this all I don't have a problem with people who are atheist and agnostic I may not understand them but they don't understand me so whats the diff.

Attending someplace you're able to do relaxing stuff with compatible human beings has tremendously plenty a similar result no remember what the interest is. singing your head off with others in a bar or a human beings club, going to a political rally the place some guy tells you that each little thing is going to be ok - that has a similar result too.
