I learned that the problem isn't the religion, it's how the religion is presented. If one is a Buddhist, they won't kill you or call you stupid or evil for not being a Buddhist, but that's because Buddhism is presented as a philosophy, not the undeniable truth of an almighty deity. They welcome knowledge from where ever it is found, accept the good, and discard the bad. They encourage free thought, and therefore better people.

The religions that are presented as the undeniable truth of an almighty deity are the ones that cause all the problems. Their adherents are often close-minded to anything but their religions, and are sometimes willing to resort to violence to rid themselves of dissenting voices. They encourage group-thinking, and tell themselves that they ARE the better people.

Edit: Suzanne, I would argue that those weren't true Buddhists, because the information is coming from a "Christian" website. Find me something credible and I'll say you have a point. This same website says that homosexuals can change their sexual orientation http://www.crosswalk.com/11554294/ and hawks christian religious paraphenalia. I wouldn't exactly expect them to be completely truthful about who really did what at anytime anywhere in the real world. I just expect them put out information with no proof to back it up.

My most pleasant enlightenment has been in the attitude of other atheists - that evangelism of an atheist philosophy is a worthwhile and honorable pursuit with it's eventual goal to win a better chance at achieving a lasting world peace. Seeing the back-lash intolerance for US Fundamental Christianity has been a delight to me as well... It's long past due for atheism to take the wind out of the puffed-up sails of the politically aggressive Christian Right here in the United States... a right that isn't right at all.

The rest that I've picked up are all tid-bits and specifics of this or that religion... like: Mohammad proclaiming himself as a divine being, Jesus never speaking in anger except to a few Jews and that Hinduism is the oldest of the formalized theistic religions. In any case, it's all been fun to learn and I'm happy that I've read it all... the BS and the non-BS.

That there a lot of people from one end of the spectrum to the other, who think that they are so correct in their beliefs and close-minded, that I'm not sure if they learn anything but how to argue more effectively.

On the other hand I have learned that there are very nice people of all faiths (or no faith).

I've learned a few things from pagans, an idea or concept here and there.

But maybe most surprising to me, I've learned there is a tiny sub-culture of atheists who are so pre-occupied with atheism and a sort of Madeleine Murray O'Hair clone atheist evangelism as to spend a lot of time on the issue and resemble O'Hair in other ways. Even atheists were somewhat ashamed of being associated with her while she was alive.

There is more hatred of Christians than I thought.
Few atheists are creative in insulting.
Christians continue to grow at different paces, which was a confirmation of what I already knew to be so.
The muslims really do want to dominate the entire world.
There's 3 or 4 things.

There are some wonderful people on this forum with serious questions and deep concern for others.

We can all learn from each other, and try to respect the differences in others without bias and hatred.

That the Abrahamic religions are even more backward, primitive, barbaric, and devoid of any credibility or merit than I originally thought. And that's saying something.

That posting on internet forums is indeed very much like playing politics. Everyone puts a spin on their opinions.

That the world isn't such a bad place to live in . And there are many people out there who are able to love and respect others' religion & beliefs (or non-beliefs)... :)
