I once heard that New York is the only place where it is socially acceptable to live like you're in college well into your 30s--I find that completely true. If you're not married (and don't come from a wealthy family) it's not uncommon to be 35 and living with a roommate just to make ends meet.

It's true about the small apartments. From an outsiders point of view, they probably think we're crazy for paying $1800 a month for an apartment the size of a walk in closet in Iowa, but we believe that it's totally worth the trade off to live in this amazing city.

As far as average wages for part time, that can vary greatly. When I first moved here, I was working retail and that job started at $10 an hour. I barely got by (in fact, looking back, I don't know how I did it).

So unless you're a student, or independently wealthy, it's next to impossible to live here with only a part time job.

Wages vary a lot ....depending on what type of job you are doing. You could be making like 20K part time. Full time jobs you can be making anywhere from that amount to over 100k easily.

For many people it is a struggle to pay and after awhile you just can't afford it especially if you are only working part time. People who aren't married often still have roomates in their 30s and that is totally normal in NYC.

Is it worth it?? It depends on your situation....some people want the city lifestyle and are willing to work two jobs to make ends meet. That's great...b/c living in nyc at least once in your life truly is an amazing experience. For others, its not worth it. I live in north jersey and to me....it's not worth it...eventually i plan on moving out of the area.

unless you expect to get a few part time jobs you won't be able to make it in new york. it's difficult. it depends on what you work but nothing will pay you enough to be able to live comfortably in new york. i never understood people who work like crazy to live in nyc but don't have money to even have fun in it. it's crazy what people do to live in new york
