My close friend met someone and they really like each other, and then she tells me they're second degree cousins.
They had never met and both their parents/family aren't close.
I don't know what to think!!!
She won't marry the guy, but im confused, is she wrong?

well lets see. bibicaly it,s not wrong to marry a second cousin.
It,s no longer illegal to marry a (First cousin ) in half of the states and there is no laws condeming second cousins in any state.
and the whole retarded children thing has been blown out of proportion. as between 2nd cousins the statisics state the chances of having a retarded child are the same for them as for 2 unrelated people.even in a first cousin relationship the increase is only 1.5 -2% compared to the general population.
so morally, legaly and geneticaly there seems to be nothing wrong with her seeing her 2nd cousin.
check this out.

I recently did a search on the subject -- someone said it's legal to marry a first cousin and I didn't believe it. So unless the information I found is incorrect, it turns out it is legal in most states! Amazing. But it is socially unacceptable. People just don't like the idea of that close of relations being romatically involved.

i suppose its a personal choice even marrying a 1st cousin is not illegal (in England) but she should be made aware that any children that came from the relationship would have a higher chance of being born with a hereditary illness or a disability (not for definite just a bit more likely)
its not a choice that i`d make but every one has the right to their own choice and lifestyle within the law
People should spend more time sorting out there own backyard and less time judging others

NOT so in WV. Indeed, one of the major pastimes here in WV is genealogy - just so close cousins DON'T mistakenly "get together." Indeed, people often move from one county to another just to find a mate - because they're too closely related to everyone in their "home" county.
I live in WV - but am a transplant - so fortunately, I'm "not from here."
That said, second cousins going out together and enjoying each other's company is one thing. Anything more "serious" than that is perhaps a little too close for comfort.

Dating cousins? Well, Edgar Allen Poe did it... oh, sorry, that's not helpful.
From a purely objective standpoint, there's nothing wrong with it. If they aren't going to have children together, there's no genetic issues (and being second cousins, there's not much of a problem there anyway). And if they aren't marrying, then there's no legal issue.
In fact, the only problem they'll have is the social stigma - and that's only if they publicize the fact that they're related.
The "ew factor" from a lot of your answerers wouldn't be present if they were, say, 8th cousins. (Fun fact: most people in any given region are related somewhere in their family tree.)

No it's not wrong though many will disagree. I have first cousins who met as adults, not having known one another as kids growing up and they ended up getting married, have 5 grown children and grandparents of one. All have ten fingers and ten toes and are not abnormal in any way.
I also have a cousin married to her second cousin, again 5 perfectly healthy children.
Both were married in the church and are perfectly legal marriages.

second degree is still close.
my aunt made a mistake of dating her 3rd cousin and my grandma freaked out. of course nobody knew until the guy came over to pick her up. see a second cousin means that your grandparents were siblings. that is still close.
i know you said that she won't marry him but dating nowadays entails kissing and lots of sex. would you have sex with a cousin? i treat my cousins like my siblings. pretty incest sounding to me.
the fact that they are not close doesn't make it right to date. lets say i have a long lost brother who i am not close to and then i meet him and we like each other. that is just plain wrong and no different from your friends situation.
what if she gets pregnant? then her kid will be her kid and nephew. they don't advise intercourse until after the 3rd degree because the negative traits and hereditary conditions of the family will be doubled in the offspring therefore making it extremely dominant to the point that the child is no longer normal.
