Go to the shelter and save a dog. A medium sized dog is better for kids, they can handle the fast actions and roughness of kids better than a small dog. If you haven't had a dog with your kids before you will need to teach the kids how to handle the dog, no ear and tail pulling, etc. If you have young kids a furry coat may require regular maintenance that you won't have time for, and may also require grooming at a salon. The shelter will suggest dogs that should be good around kids, they usually test them to see if they'll be OK around other dogs, kids, cats. Of course if you get a puppy, how you teach him to respect the family will be your doing, so get him into obedience training and through positive training show him whose the boss. I raised my kids with German Shepherds/mixes and they all survived each other, the most dangerous thing about large dogs is they can knock a small child down. Shelters frown on rehoming large dogs to homes with kids. Medium dogs will handle a good game of fetch, or jog around the yard with the kids.

How much time do you have to spend with it? How much do you want to dedicate to grooming? What is your commitment to training the dog? Most any breed can be either good or bad with children, depending on how it is raised, the children in question and its innate temperament. How old are the kids?
These are the more important things to answer, not just choosing a dog based on its looks.

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a good family dog, they are fuzzy, protective, loyal, and good with kids, although you'd prolly want to read up on them a bit, they are instinctive herding dogs, and known to try to nip at your heels to get you to go where they want you to, it's a little habit you have to break them from, but after that they are very good dogs to have around! I have 3 of them, with 2 and 4 year old kids around, and the dogs have been great with them! Also they need daily/weekly brushing to control shedding for the first 4 years. Here's a site to tell ya a lilttle bit about the breed. I breed and raise them, they are wonderful little dogs. They get to about 28-35 pounds.

A Bichon Frise is about 15-18 lbs, has a thick curly coat, non-shedding (although it needs regular trips to the groomer to be trimmed), and loves children. They are very smart, easy to train, and very affectionate and playful.

A miniature Poodle could also be a good choice, most are good with children and have the same grooming requirements.

Go to www.dogbreedinfo.com and on the right-hand side click "take breed quiz"- it will ask you a few questions about your lifestyle and wants in a dog and it will give you breeds that would be good for you.
I would say a Cocker Spaniel or Miniature Poodle.

how about a maltipoo, which is maltese/poodle mix. we got one when he was 13wks old, and he is wonderful. they don't shed, and are very furry, but the coat is actually 'hair' so it's as soft as mink. we have a 7 year old girl, and our dog is great with her. he's very gentle. he's almost 6 months old now, and very, very smart. maltipoo's are REALLY cute. good luck !!

Eww pugs are so gross!

Get a Bichone Frise. hypoallergenic (human type hair, doesn't shed!), cute, cuddly and good with kids.
My uncle has one that knows commands in Spanish and English, because he rescued it from the streets of Chile.

I would suggest a Shih Tzu. The temperment of the dog mostly depends on how you train it and how you are towards it.
