You saw the answer above. But here is a suggestion to you and anyone who reads this question. Take your DD-214 to your County Clerks office. They will copy it and enter it into the Veterans Book Then in the future ( can be 40 years ) if you need a copy of your DD-214 You just go to the County Clerks office and they will be able to make you a certified copy for free.

If you have ever filed a claim with the VA, they should have a copy. You can contact them at 800-827-1000. They can pull your c-file and send a copy to you.

If you haven't filed a claim, you will have to order a copy from St. Louis. You can go to www.archives.gov but the form you will need to complete is a SF 180 (SF standing for standard form) If you go to google and do a search for SF 180 you will be able to find a printable copy. Upon completing the form, you will see a group of addresses at the bottom of the second page. You will need to send it to address number 14. The process of ordering a copy usually takes about a month.

The only other option is to rack your brain to see if you may have put a copy on file somewhere else, like when applying for a loan that gave discounts to vets. If this is not the case, you will have to go with the options above

They told you when you got out that you needed to make sure you kept your copy for a reason. Its actually a huge hassel to get a copy of your DD-214. They have to get a clerk at central file (for the Navy its in Millington, TN) to find your file on micro-fiche and make a copy.

It usually depends on whith branch of service you served and how long ago you were released. If you were recently released from the Navy, you can go to the Naval Reserve Personnel Center in New Orleans. For all services, there is the National Personnel Records Center. Probably your best bet is to go to http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html which will take you step by step in getting your DD214.

Uh, what did you do with it when you got out? You are supposed to keep copies of everything. The best thing that you can do is contact your reserve or national guard unit and ask if they have a copy. Or you can look on your online record.
