No, wear a shirt and tie to show you're making an effort then if you get the job you can clarify what you wear for the job! Even a shirt without the tie but looking tidy might do??

Depending on type of sportwear store, dress according to type of style the store offers. Like for instance Hot Topics is a little funky and Pacific Sun is very casual summery type and then there is Chicks which is more sports oriented. If your interview is at the location you will be working, check out the type of fashion the manager and other sales people are wearing. If I were interviewing you , I would lean toward someone who would best portray the type of business I sell. I would like someone who has the same type image as my customers. If you dress too business like you may look like you are more interested in a desk job and may come across as not being salesman material for a sportswear store. If the position is for administration type work then definitely go for sports coat, long sleeve shirt and depending on how high the administration position add a tie. Good Luck ! Go for casual if you are young and it is for a store sales position.

Advice given by others here that you should dress smartly (think weddings, funeral and job interviews) is good advice.
If you want an edge then go and look at how the staff already dress and dress like them, ( a llittle smarter if pos ) as selling is about making people like you and about creating a scene/atmosphere the store will have its own particular style, simply show that your into this style too.
One word of warning though with this strategy, don't make your own name badge for the interview, this will make them feel uncomfortable, and they will give you one after the interview anyway.

Well, if it's a sportswear store, you want to look the part, but you also don't want to be too casual. How about a nice polo shirt and some khakis with some tie-up oxfords?

As a regular interviewer I can assure you if anyone turns up for interview without smart attire I would not consider them for the position whatever the job! Trackies and a shirt implies a "cant be bothered" and lazy attitude. Trust me either a suit or shirt and smart trousers is essential.

I would wear a shirt and tie and trousers
Remember you can never dress up, but you can dress down, and first impressions are essential.
Especially as you will be working in a shop- the manager wants to know you look presentable

Whenever you go for an interview, no matter who the job is with, wear a shirt and tie! You have to show them that you present yourself well and that you are a responsible and professional individual.

I vote with dressing up. You can't go wrong by being dressed in tie and shirt, but you can go wrong by dressing too casually.
I remember talking to the owner of a high tech business one time. The employees and management all came to work in jeans and sweats and shorts and darned near anything else that appealed to them. The owner told me that although they had a casual dress code, he wouldn't hire anyone who didn't dress up for the interview. He said it showed respect for the position.
Something to think about. My suggestion is go with the attire that won't harm your chances. Why gamble by dressing too casually?

I think you should wear a shirt and tie (oh and trousers) :-)
I have my own business, and none of us here wear suits, we all wear jeans and shorts. However, I would expect someone coming for an interview to be smartly dressed. First impressions count.
Good luck.

I spoke to my freind about this because I was going for an interview somewhere very casual, and she said regardless of the company always wear a suit for your interview to show you're professional and serious about the job! Good luck x
