My wife has a conference there next week and I wanted to know if it was safe to venture out to places like the French Market and Audobon Park. Any information that can be given on the area would be great.

Sure! The French Quarter is generally safe. As long as you stick to the more common, tourist areas, you should be ok. Audubon zoo and park is relatively crime free. However, don't visit City Park after nightfall. Harrah's Casino is at the end of Canal Street, and a lot of this entire area is being revitalized. Go enjoy yourself!

Yes the French Quarter is very safe. As with any major city safety in numbers is always a good thing. At night just stay on well lite streets and where there is more traffic. I walk and ride my bike all over the city and have never had any issues especially in the touristy areas. Audonbon Park is also safe during the day.

The French Quarter (where most things happen) is as safe as anywhere in the USA. Venturing outside of the tourist areas is always risky. The police do a nice job in keeping tourists safe.

They are very safe if you stay in the "touristy" areas. Don't venture out into places you are not familiar with then you might be in trouble.

its very safe in any tourist area u want to go into, going into residental areas be more careful, and the streetcars are not running at this time, so you would have to take the public bus running along st. charles ave. or a cab.

I've talked to many locals there recently (I'm going in October) and I was told it's perfectly safe and there are many police around. Just use good judgement at night like in any other city.

Sure is...come on down!

Oh and BTW..Lauren is it? We call them streetcars here and they are still running only to limited locations, I think only to Lee Circle so far. But I think they are supposed to continue to St. Charles by the end of October with continue work on-going to finish up around spring 2008.
