I have been wondering how good Jr really is. Had he not been the son of the Dale, would he still be driving in the big leagues today?
My guess is we'll know in the next couple of years.

How about waiting to see what happens? While I will agree
that Jr. is not as good of a driver as Martin, he is still a good
driver, just not a great one. And engine failures are usually
the shops fault, not the driver.

Jr won 17 races by being a good driver. Its obvious that his cars are not as good in the last few years as they were between 2000-2004 when he won 15 races. He isn't as good as Sr and won't win 7 championships but then again who is?
Truex had several engine problems this year too. The difference is that his seem to get caught after practice or qualifying. Its not Jr's job to inspect engines. The engines are a DEI problem that the whole team has suffered with all season.
I'm not saying Jr is the best driver out there because he isn't. I'm just saying he is a lot better than most people give him credit for.
Sporting - Max Siegel has no experience in NASCAR and only got involved this year. Anything he brings to the team won't show up this season. Teresa Earnhardt is a good business women but doesn't seem interested in the racing side of things just the business/sales.

Thank you for doing this question. Is is so psychologically correct, it almost puts a tear in my eye, for Jr. The fans are only spectators and the majority only know what they see on the surface. The percentage who understand racing indepth will feel this question. Now we get to see what the majority of his fans think. I still think Junior is too nice of a guy, he is a good driver, but i'ld say even Kyle Bush is meaner than Jr. Someone needs to G-rat Jr. a little bit, I wanna see him kick it in '08 with that groovy new car he's got. But no matter what, you know Jr. is proud to have the father he had. Dale Jr. made that red Budweiser #8 car infamous, something created only by what he did in this sport. That's NASCAR history, and I think it's working out just fine. As far as Mark Martin goes... rock on DEI !!!!

I like Mark Martin as much as the next guy but I don't know that he's ever been "dominant" in the Winston or Nextel Cup Series. He hasn't won a race for 2 years and only has 2 wins in the last 5 years. Jr will be fine when he is in dependable equipment. He would have been fine this year had it not been for 5 DNFs and the 100 point penalty for the rear wing mounting brackets.

Martin may not be dominant (wins), but he will be consistant (top 5-10). If you look at the owner points for this year, even with his rookie teammates usual finishes in the 30s, he still would have been a lock in the chase based on his performances. I can understand wanting to go out while you are still a great driver, but I think he has a few more years left in him. Race full time Mark!!!!

Mark Martin was in a Hendrick car till a couple of weeks ago. Martin will not be in the car that is numbered 8 this year next year or be with Jr's present team. Hardly anyone here has a clue to what is real and what is pure BS
The deal is done, lets talk about it next year when we have some facts.

I think Jr has the skill, it is that moron of a crew chief, Tony Urine Jr. and DEI engines that are killing him. I fear for Mark Martin in 2008. I hope he remembers not to try to drive the #8 fast.

I think if Junior goes to Hendricks and isn't successful in a few years, then one could make this statement. I think he may need a new crew chief. He was very successful when
Tony Sr. was his crew chief, with Tony Jr. not so much. Or maybe Tony Jr. will come along under the tutelage of Chad Knauss and Steve Letarte.

whatever dude, look at the stats, Jr. does alright for the team he has to deal with...you cant sit here and say that DEI motors and Hendrick motors(for example) are at the same calibre...come on...watch 24 and 48, heck even 5, they drive the pure crap out of their motors and those dont blow up. As for Mark Martin, where has he been all season...really...I'm tired of everybody hatin' on Dale because he is more popular than any other driver and because he is going to be a real factor next year and its making big news..Go JR! #88 in 08' AMP!!!!!!!!!!!

Impossible to compare, because DEI will be using different engines next year.
It is interesting to see that Mark only has one DNF this year, and it came at DEI with an engine related failure. His racing style must be too hard on the DEI engines.
