In the past there was nothing to combat shingles other than minor pain relief from something like acetaminophen, or steroids. Now, some of the anti-viral drugs developed for AIDS are given to people with shingles when they have outbreaks, and there is a vaccine that is supposed to keep them from returning. Its a good idea to see the doctor for shingles since there are new treatments. There are no effective self-treatments.
