why do you feel the way you do?

As a Christian, I feel a true believer or a true Atheist are on the same level. They have both done their research heavily to make an educated decision, or at least as educated as you can with what you have in front of you. It is ultimately a personal decision, of course, whether you choose to believer or not. There is a lot of evidence for both sides, so it is mostly how you interpret them. A blind follower is not a true follower, as is the same for a blind disbeliever.

That depends. People who blindly hold beliefs in any kind of system, religious or secular, are thinking at a pretty shallow level. I know some very spiritual people who do believe in the divine but have come to that conclusion because they have put a lot of thought and study into the matter and have had experiences and perceptions of the world that make the belief in the divine as the only "logical" choice for them. I see that as a much deeper form of thought than believing because an authority figure (preacher, priest, parents, society) told you this is what you should believe. And the same kind of deep thinking can go for the "non-believers" as well - I think you would find that there are folks who have come to that conclusion after serious thought and study on the matter.

I think to try to call all the members of any kind of general group ("believers" vs "non-believers") is an oversimplification and does a disservice to all involved. If you want to know how deep an individual is and the kind of thought that has gone into their beliefs, try asking!

I believe in God and I believe that I am a "deep" thinker. I don't believe that one has much to do with the other. If you keep an open mind, you can think deep. And I'm proof that someone who believes in God can keep an open mind, as can someone who doesn't believe. There are closed minded and open minded people on both sides of the coin. So I think your question should be - "Do open or closed minded people think deeper?"

"Feeling" has nothing to do with it, just like belief does not change the facts.

People that believe in god (or gods) tend to interpret everything from that viewpoint regardless of the facts. They also tend to assume everything is a belief i.e. that you can believe or not believe in established fact. Granted, there are some believers that will think deeply within their establish framework of belief.

Non-believers tend to approach things more objectively and can consider the possibilities that facts present without fitting them into a particular belief system.

Maybe I'm not answering the right question though. "Deep thinking" is not necessarily objective, analytical, or rational thinking. "Deep thinking" is really not exclusively associated with either side, but is more of an individual characteristic.

It depends on HOW the person believes in God. Some of the greatest minds in the history of man believed in God. Aristotle, Plato, Socrates ALL believed in God, though the way they believed in Him(Her) was not as Christians or religious groups believe in Him(Her) today. One can easily be a deep thinker and still believe that we came from a higher source. Einstein believed in God. Physics is said to be "the path to understanding the mind of God". I myself believe in God but without being chained down by man-made doctrines. And just because I believe in God does not mean that I can not look at a question from all angles and answer it according to deep analysis and thought.

I face a mystery. I have two options:

"God did it." I abdicate all responsibility to find an answer. I effectively can shut off my mind at that point.

"I don't know, but let's figure it out!" I take ownership of the question, and with it, the responsibility of working to find an answer, be it study, research, or experimentation. The universe threw down a gauntlet, I have picked it up, and the challenge is mine to overcome.

You tell me which one involves more dedication and thought.

To believe in God - no thinking is required, just blind faith.

To not believe in God requires deep thought and consideration of all the available evidence because our civilisation has been awash with religion that has been ingrained into every aspect of our lives.

To go against the grain also takes courage.

Please read my words carefully:
If you see footmark in the sand, you'll say that someone passed from here...
If you see a piece of dog sh*t on the ground, you'll say that a dog passed from here...
So what about the enormous universe, the sky, stars, planets, earth and all the beauty in it, doesn't it lead to that someone made it?!!!

Some people say that everything is created by itself after the big-bang... I won't ask you about what caused the big-bang, but I'll ask you a simple question:
If you take all the letters of the alphabet, multiples of them, and you threw them randomly on the floor. Do you expect (by a chance of one in infinity) to get a poem like shakespear's??!!

Can't you see how organized our universe is, the planets, the eco-system on earth, look even in your own body... Can you control your heart-beat? Can you control your breath while you're sleeping? Who stopped your eye-lashes from growing after reaching a certain length? Who told the baby turtles to move towards the sea and not to the earth after they come out of their eggs? Who taught the bird how to make nests?

My friend, think with your heart and brain. If you're still lost, think about the following:

Do you know how to play safe?
Non-believer's case:
If there's no God and you do all what you want in life, then nothing will happen to you after life. But if there was God and you were mistaken, then you'll blame yourself FOREVER...

Believer's case:
If there's God and I followed His commands in life, then I'll be in Heaven after life FOREVER. But if there was no God and we're mistaken, then nothing bad will happen to us after life...

Now you know how to play-safe, in case you're not convinced?

Atheists we search for truth and mostly follow science.
Therefore we do a lot more thinking all believers seem to do is live and breathe the one thing God.

That's a false dichotomy. It's possible to think deeply about either - for example, Bertrand Russell and C.S. Lewis.
