Now if it was a family member or very close friend. I do not think it would be a problem to ask. But if there are a lot of people at the table. Then I would say no, unless the person who cooked brought out the left overs and said who would like more, and she put some on your plate. You do not know if there are seconds and the cook may feel very awkward if she does not have enough food for seconds. So I would think it would be best to wait untill the person hosting the dinner ask if anyone wants second.

Chacha, you ask a sensitive question. And your good judgement and sensitivity are required to help you with this.
In general, no, it is not rude to ask for a second helping...as some of your answerers have pointed out, it is a compliment to the host for you to enjoy the hospitality. But consider this: if your host, out of pride or custom, offers hospitality that he cannot really afford to offer because he has 6 hungry children, you need only accept a token amount to satisfy custom. Save your requests for second helpings for another time.

I would wait until someone else asks for a second helping, then, if I am certain that everyone has been served at least a healthy first serving, then I would ask for a second helping, adding many compliments to the cook.

As long as everyone has had a first helping then go for it! If you were at my house and wanted seconds I would be honored that you like me food enough to eat more. Plus if you are invited over for a meal I want you to be full when you leave!

As long as everyone has been served then , No-- it's not rude-- actually it lets the host know you are enjoying the meal and keeps them from having to eat leftovers for a week.

If I had prepared the meal, I would take it as a compliment and not think it rude.

It's rude if you can see that there isn't much of a second helping to be had.

I would if I knew the people and it wasn't a formal dinner. It does let them know you are enjoying their cooking.

No, of course it's not. If someone wanted more at my place, I would be happy because it means they liked my cooking!
