Do the math. there were 600,000 men between 20 and 60 years of age. Reasonable assumption that there are a similar number of women in the same age range....that's 1.2 million. There were at least 600,000 male children under twenty at the start as all the first 600,000 died in the desert save a handful. Add in a similar number of females under 20 at the start and the total comes to 2.4 million. Then there are the elderly and those not included in the census and one comes to a total of between 2.5-3 million.

What? They couldn't stop ask ask for directions?
Out of 600,000 men, surely someone must have wondered, if the dude in charge had a map or at least clear directions.
You can certainly tell that a woman was not in charge...We do know how to stop & ask some camel jockey which way is>>>>> and if we are going in the right direction or if the Bedoins at the next Oasis have maps to sell.
I mean...REALLY!

Why haven't the scholars who have answered above mentioned the fact that the "Jews" were only one of the 12 tribes making up the mob that Moses led.
Take a look for the first time the word "Jew" is even mentioned in the Bible. It is long after the amazing events of the Ancient Israelites.
So your answer is 'no'.

Yes , it should have taken a few weeks but , the grumblings and murmurings and disobedience of unbelief of the people led God to have them journey for forty years till all the unbelievers generation were dead , and the next generation went into the promise land.

They went around that mountain in the desert for 40 years, because they couldn't get their heart right with God. God killed a few of the rebellious crowd. God wanted their hearts right because He was calling Israel "His People." Today, they are still "His People" and God has not forgotten Israel. God has made Israel an example for all men to show men what will happen to you if you forget God.

Some say more than 6 million.
What's more amazing is they are still there. Not in the desert but where Moses was leading them.
