Gee, didn't you know? They believe that the more miserable you can possibly be in this life, the more credit points you get towards a snazzy bit of real estate in Heaven some day. Indeed, if they think they're not racking up their brownie points fast enough they do everything they can think of to make themselves even more miserable by condemning, and thus shunning, anything and everything that's the least bit enjoyable in this life.
However, it is very piss-offing at the same time, to see "non-believers", unhampered and unphazed by all that obscession with "righteous misery" having a perfectly good, enjoyable, gratifying life. So, true to the twin strategies of "Threat" and "Fear" they seek to constantly remind everybody that the penalties for refusing to "toe the line" are Hell and Damnation, and your sure and certain banishment to a place of endless retribution ---- a fiery pit of torment where you will scream and holler in unimagineable suffering for aaaaaaaalll Eternity.
Having said all that, to be fair I am talking about a certain extreme fundamentalist faction who have achieved a total disconnect with reality and are so "indoctrinated" as to be almost zombie-like in their behaviour and mindset. They are true cultists by every definition of the word and they really do not reflect the far more numerous, ordinary, everyday self-declared "christian" who simply defines himself as somebody - albeit far from perfect - doing the best he can to be as "christian" as his built-in imperfections will allow. This type of christian usually doesn't go around telling others they are going to hell, and for exactly what reasons...... having a few extra bucks......having a couple of alcoholic drinks a day....... not spending enough time on their knees....... not being a believer at all.... etc. etc. They quietly get on with the business of being their own kind of Christian, do not preach to others or try to convert them, and do not claim to have God's private confidence regarding the ultimate fate of everybody in the neighborhood and every member of their family who doesn't share their belief system.
I live among a great many of the latter category of Christians, and I have never seen or heard them act other than perfectly normal. The first kind, well, I have run into very few of them, and when I do, I make a U-turn and run the other way.

Hiya Good question.
The fact of the matter is that the things that you have outlined , hell ,damnation, suffering, pain, retribution, inquisitions , were all things brought by man , and is not supported in the Bible or practiced by true Christians today.
The Bible teaches that 'hell' is the common grave of mankind - but man and his apostate pagan religions teach it as being a place of eternal damnation.
The Bible also teaches that there is no 'eternal damnation' - that is , an eternal suffering for people that do wrong.
Pain , the Bible teaches that pain was brought upon man because he followed the lies of Satan and then dropped from his imperfect state.
Pain and suffering is not brought by God.
Retribution , or , vengeance is spoken about in Romans 12:19 ¨Do NOT avenge yourselves, beloved, but yield place to wrath : for it is written :¨Vengeance is mine: I will repay, says Jehovah¨
So here it says that Christians should be completely peaceful as it will be Almighty god Jehovah that repays people for their wickedness.
Inquisitions , well ,the inquisitions of the past were headed by governments allied to unChristain churches , and they used torture to force conversions of people.
This sort of practice OBVIOUSLY cannot ever be approved by God.
God doesn't need and has no wish to force anyone into following his will.
So you see, the things that you have outlined are not , and have never been practiced by true Christians , but rather religions that are inspired by Gods enemy Satan.
For more Bible based info plz feel free to email me.

Why are YOU so negative? We also believe in the love of God, the blessings of Jesus' gift, repentence, grace, redemption, forgiveness, eternal happiness up in Heaven where there will be no hell, damnation, suffering, pain, retribution, inquisitions, fear, etc.
You're actually pretty negative in many of all your questions, actually. In a previous one, you ask what's worse: Hell or death and decay. Why didn't you mention Heaven? Why do you always seem to focus on the negative? Maybe if you had Jesus in your life, you would be more positive.

Hello I'm an Atheist.. :)
I respect your thoughts and admire your questions.. :)
Yes..I do believe there is a hell and damnation.. :(
How can one not believe in suffering, pain, retribution, Inquisitions and fear..
All you have to do is read the newspaper to see suffering and pain of precious little children along with their families in this country and others..(That is why it is my hearts desire to be a Missionary)..
Do not those, who see others, that break the law and pay for their crimes..get retribution..
Inquisitions are still happening in our courts..Just check out our Politicians..
I am not negative, but rather I have a positive spirit..my heart jumps for joy, when I am able to help those that are less fortunate than myself.. :)
As for having any fear..I can with all honesty say No, I do not harbor any.. :)
Because perfect ~Love~ (Jesus) casts out all fear.. :)
In Jesus Most Precious Name..
with ~Love~ your "Friend" In Christ.. :)

Atheists and anti Christians when they have gotten power in 20 th cent history have been just as negative and a curse on humanity.
Why is human nature so prone to the negative, the violent, the oppressive and sinful?
Of course, Christians also believe in
Heaven,
salvation,
healing,
compassion,
charity,
forgiveness,
deliverence
transformation
Final Justice
and the like
In balance,Christianity is far more positive than negative.
Also, there are many ,many forms and expressions of Christianity and there are aberrations from it and in it.
Maybe Christianity is realististic after all?

We also believe in Heaven, Salvation, an end to suffering, pain and fear. Why are you willing to give up all of that? Seems like you are the negative one.

God doesn't want people serving Him just because of a fear of Hell. He loves and wants to be loved in return.
Christians believe in ABUNDANT LIFE, enjoying that life, Forgiveness, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Gentleness, Long Suffering, Love, Joy, Goodness, Faithfulness, and being Humble....(sarcastically---->) Oh NOW I see your point!
Seriously, We are just people who understand that things are not what they look like. You may not see a spiritual world but we do. You may not see the devil at work, but we do.
You listed those things in your question as if you DON'T believe in suffering, pain, retribution....are these words things that don't happen in real life where you live? Because Christian or not my friend...That's life. Just because you don't BELIEVE in something doesn't mean it doesn't work or that it's not there. You don't have to BELIEVE in Gravity....But guess what? You're on the ground right now because of it.

Stereotype alert! Stereotype alert!
I happen to be a Christian, and I don't believe in Hell, damnation, suffering, pain, retribution, inquisitions, OR fear. No doubt some Christians are into this way of thinking, but I fail to see how stereotyping and generalizing solves anything. Why are YOU being so negative?

Well to be fair, hell and damnation arent our inventions, those are Gods in reaction to sin.
Suffering and pain came as a result of sin, so look in the mirror if you want someone to blame.
Retribution is simple mathmatics and physics. For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction.
Inquisitions were not mandated by Scripture and in fact quite the opposite. Not a Christian invention or origin but one of tyrants posing as men of God.
Fear is a human reaction, probably a result of our sin.
We take no responsibility for any of these.

Christians do not believe in those things, Christians believe in Jesus Christ. All of those things are up for interpretation as to what you mean by each individual thing. Don't you believe there is suffering and pain? I have no belief in inquisitions, that was a Catholic thing in the middle ages, nothing to do with Christianity.
