What is better for an actual fight, I am considering doing one of the two, boxing seems like the better one to me as it seems much more difficult to land a kick than it does a punch???

You still punch in Kickboxing. I'm a big boxing fan but the best kick-boxer would crush the best boxer in any class. Kickboxing is harder endurance wise also, you don't see any fat kick-boxers

I just happened to hit on this question on my way to the martial arts section. As a former fighter who has trained and worked with both amateur and professional boxers and kick boxers I would have to both disagree and agree with you. Boxers because they exclusively train and fight with their hands tend to develop their skill to a much higher level. However, their are some kick boxers that have developed their kicking skills to as high of a level as those of a boxer with his hands. Most of these fighters have an earlier background in martial arts so their understanding and ability of how to use their kicks is usually far more advanced than someone that just starts out in kickboxing with no martial arts experience.

Kick-boxers that have good kicking ability have the advantage of reach and power since legs tend to be longer and stronger than arms. Kicks to the ankles, lower legs, knees, groin as well as to higher targets can be attacked very effectively in many cases by them. Also if they have some former background in martial arts they usually, but not always, have some kind of understanding of the use of the knee and elbow when a person is too close to punch, clinches, and/or is on the ground. Besides this there also are the open handed striking aspects to the eyes, ears, neck, and throat at close range to consider as well.

Boxers tend to be better with their footwork and defensively at closer range though and good at slipping and countering. In a street situation where there are no rules and a boxer is by no means defenseless but he is limited in the scope in which he can more easily defend himself-especially if there is a lot of wrestling, clinching, and the fight ends up on the ground or he can not effectively close the distance and keep the fight in a standup situation. I would opt for the kickboxing if it was a good school and coach that taught the use of the knees and elbows and spend extra time developing my kicking skills and abilities.

Personaly, kick boxing is in now aday's. Its a better defense to if you ever need to use it. I had 2 older brothers in boxing and I myself used to have to box them. A person would never figure that by looking at me but I was damm good at it. I even used to hit the speed bag and loved it. But what I gathered out of all of it is. Straight forward punches and having lots of wind. Thats why you always see boxers jogging and running because it takes alot out of you in the ring. Now if you were to kick box (which I have never tried) seems like you would get a little more out of it to me and more of a challange. Can't say it would do the body any better in the ring but more of a challenge maybe. But who knows that was alot of years ago I did this.

For actual fighting - both are terrific. Kickboxing will work well for distance fighting, whereas boxing will have the advantage within arms length.

Close infighting, kickboxing with its knees and elbows will certainly have a marked advantage over boxing.

I would suggest considering MMA for true life fighting techniques. It covers up close and distance fighting. You may not become as technically brilliant as a specialised martial art style, but it doesn't sound like that is what you want.

Well, for actual street fighting, neither. Most street fights end up on the ground within seconds. However, both will certainly give you valuable striking capability, as well as balance and agility. I've always valued boxing moreso as a sport in that I feel there is more technique and strategy involved. But as I said, in a street fight, you're not looking to go rounds with the guy, you're looking to end it as quickly as possible. Look into fighting styles such as Krav Maga (Israeli counterterrorism uses it), or grappling styles, such as jujitsu. And remember, regardless of what you choose, make it a lifestyle. It may be a valuable weapon that will protect your life someday.

I like a good old fashion boxing match. Kickboxing does look fun though and is very "popular" these days. BOXING. Have fun which ever you choose, you could always do both. Try one now and get the hang or it and then apply what you have learned to the other sport.

If it's a street fight, there are no rules. Kick if you want. Pull hair. Bite.
