If you want the most options and accessories, go with a 1911 Model as this is by far the most popular semi-auto handgun on the market and therefore has the widest selection.

I like Kimber, although they are a bit pricey. Buy a quality American-Made model that fits you comfortably and you should have years of happy shooting.

There is no "Best" handgun there may very well be a handgun that is best for you and the application you intend it for. The most generic would be a 357 mag revolver with a 4" barrel and target sights you can do a lot with it but if you get to specifics there would be better choices. You need to decide what you want it for. Is it to be the only handgun you are to get? Would two or three different guns cover your needs better? Then look at the brands and models to see which one fits your hand and is the easiest for you to operate.

that is a wide open question.
not knowing what you would use it for (target -self defense -home protection - hunting) or your experience, or your budget. there are some good semi's already named but they are not target or hunting guns.
the best handgun is totally a personal opinion. and changes due to need, weather, budget, and just how you feel some mornings.
think about what you want to do with it, then go to a good gun store and get your hands on some models that fill the bill. what ever you get, practice handling it empty, take it apart to clean it good, then go to a range and put a couple of boxes rounds through it, to make sure it is reliable. remember safety first and always

For a gun that takes abuse well, Will work with parts missing, And are affordable Check out Glock. I have carried one for 3 years it has been dropped submerged in water, Floated in Katrina water. And it still shoots perfectly.
BTW mines a Glock30 in .45acp
You asked What the best gun is, So I am gonna assume you wanted one of the best guns for personale defense, and Home defense. If you are talkin about a competition match type gun. Any of the high end 1911 makers have great race guns

that is an unanswerable question because it asks for an opinion and we all know what they say about those
i believe a pistol to do it all is a 44 rem mag in a double action like a Ruger Redhawk with a 5 1/2" barrel or a Colt Anaconda with a 6" barrel as it is powerful enough to hunt with but is small enough to protect your home and person

The best handgun is the one that you are most accurate and familiar with...

Some brands you might consider: Glock, Springfield, H&K, Sig Sauer, Kimber, CZ, FN, Browning, Kahr, Colt, Ruger, etc.

My personal fav is my 9mm Browning Hi-Power. I don't care much care for double actions, my Brownie has been extremely reliable and accurate and has given me many years of service without a single problem. My Ruger MK II .22 would probably be in the top ten list of my personal favs as well.

Blah blah blah, it's a handgun. Too much time spent on selection, get a glock 19 night sights a descent holster, move on with your life. Spend more time figuring out what long gun to get.

The S&W model 686 revolver with a 4-inch barrel and 7 round capacity. It is accurate and reliable. But that's just my opinion.
