It all depends where you work? Why not ask them.

They're sure to know more than an internet forum who don't know where you work!

Ask the financial people at your work! You should be able to claim "extras" like the blacked-out security windows as a work expense, but the VAT on your new car? I don't think so. If work are paying your per mile or so much per month then it should include that. You should have done your sums!

Additional:
Are *you* VAT registered? If you are, then claim the VAT back, sure. If the company pay you *per mile* then it should be enough to cover fuel, maintenance, insurance etc etc. The AA site used to have guidance on that. If they give you a monthly allowance then that is in lieu of a company car.

VAT cannot be reclaimed on any car used for non-company purposes, which includes commuting.
If your company claim back the VAT on a car, it has to be left at their premises overnight, and not used by you for private use (e.g. evenings, weekends, shopping, etc.)

However, they may be able to reclaim the VAT on any other expenditure they (not you) spend on the car, e.g. interest on finance payments, modifications for business reasons, service, maintenance, fuel, replacement parts, etc.).

If you pay for anything necessary for work, you may be able to offset the cost against income tax. This would be a private matter between you and the inland revenue, and not between you and your employer. You need to talk to a tax accountant.

thats ridiculous! maybe they can offer petrol allowance but asking them to pay for blacked out windows?

why not go the whole way and ask for a sat nav system (for speed) and a speed camera detector (so u dont get arrested before work!)???

come on, if u were an employer would u give employees money to buy silly things like that???

If its included in your job then you can but for company cars you get highly taxed, check with Inland Revenue

That's entirely down to your employers. If they want you to carry expensive equipment around for them they should pay for any security measures - either that or bear the loss if it gets stolen.
