I ebay them. I tend not to "re-gift" as I believe I deserve some sort of compensation for receiving such a horrible gift. I am all to happy to go through the trouble of auctioing and posting an item in order to receive small renumeration and eradication of something so atrocious.

I just thank them and then think of whether I can put that gift to some use or give it to someone else who might like it.
If someone I would expect to know me well gives me something that completely doesn't fit my personality I'm a little disappointed that they don't know me better than that, but I know how hard it can be to imagine what someone who is different from you might like. I'm not very good at buying gifts myself, except for people I know really well.

Pity them. At least they thought highly enough to give you a gift in the first place. Not everyone has the time to shop around for that ideal gift anymore. Sad, but true.

I save them all up in a special cupboard and give them as presents to other people I don't like much. The names go in a little black book so I remember to buy them something equally crappy when their birthday next comes around.

Well, I guess it depends on who gave it to you.
A work colleague who I don't know all that well brought me back some chocolate from her overseas holiday. She didn't think to hard about what to get me but she was thoughtful enough to bring something back. It was sweet of her to consider me in her gift buying.
If however it is your best friend & they give you something that doesn't fit you or is completely oposite to your taste then I guess you need to reassess if this person is as close to you as you thought!

maybe that was'nt the givers intention, just be polite and thank them, some people are shockers at gifts, but as the old adage goes:
"it's the thought that counts"

I give it back to them next time. When they open it and say "Didn't I already give this to you?" I say, "No, I found it so useful, that I got you one just like it". Of course, if I'm at their place when they give it to me, then I'll "accidentally" leave it behind.
