Acutally, you might want to say it vibrates really hard. I have a 1998 Hyundai Elantra. Can anyone offer any suggestions? When I am doing anything under 60, I am fine, but as soon as I hit 65, my steering wheel begins to shake a bit. What could it be?

Your tires need rebalancing if the shake gets worse the faster you go. You could also have a ply separation in one of the tires that makes it out of round. Make sure you ask your tire technician if he can detect an out of round tire because it can still be balanced perfectly on his spin balance machine and yet be a bad tire that causes shaking. Also have your tires rotated from front to back, because the shaking will be worse when the unbalanced or out of round tire is on the front of the car. Sometimes you can loose one of the lead wheel weights off the wheel's rim that are used to spin balance it. Typically there are lead balance weights both on the inside and outside edge of the wheel rim. Generally, shaking that gets worse the faster you drive is a tire balance problem, not a wheel alignment problem. A bad tire on the front can cause the car to pull hard right or left, but that doesn't mean the car necessarily needs a wheel alignment. Unless you've hit something really hard with your wheels, you probably don't need a wheel alignment and the alignment can always be just checked without actually doing a wheel alignment and having to pay the full cost.

Before you do anymore highway driving, please have all four tires checked. This happened to me several times and it really wasn't the front-end allignment, which in one case was fine, but like the first guy said: the tire layers had separated a bit and there was a extended bubble of air bulging on one tire. The first time I was OK and my friend noticed it on a rear tire and got a new one. The second time I was on the freeway and barely escaped the center divider when the tire had a big blow out. The third time I noticed the shaking while driving someones truck, I turned for home immediately. Nine out of ten, I'd say definitely an air bubble on a tire that's like a little time bomb.

The most common problem is most likely to be "wheel balancing", or worn/damaged/ tyre, etc. on rare occasions, a "track rod end/s" or wheel bearings worn, but this would normaly be apparent at even low speeds. Check tyres/wheels balancing first. if it persists, then check the latter here.good luck.

out of balance tire or wheel bearing or tire alignment.could be a bent rim,bad struts,i'd start by having wheels checked and go from there.

It sounds like you need to have your front end aligned. (the result of hitting a curb or a big pot hole.)
Additionally, what shape are your tires in? You should have them balanced & rotated for longer wear.

It happened with me too and the fault was one worn out tyre, was not matching well with new tyres of other three wheels.
