The MPEG family of codecs are international ISO standards. They include standards for audio and video coding (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, etc.)

Divx is a family of proprietary video codecs from Divx. The core of the codec is based on MPEG-4, part 2. Divx has developed proprietary pre-processing and post-processing algorithms to improve video quality.
