Can you imagine all the horrified missionaries watching the natives have sex any way they chose? Whenever they chose? In front of anyone??
It makes me giggle to think of how hard it must have been to explain to the natives that what they were doing was wrong and sinful!!
No wonder so many missionaries wound up in the cook pot!

Missionaries taught this was the only position to have sex because they didn't want the natives experimenting and enjoying it too much. So they said do it this way only in order to procreate...there was no concept that sex should be enjoyed beyond making babies once per year.

Well...a missionary is a church-oriented person,...so I can't think of a missionary doing different "wild" positions. So, it's missionary because it's plain jane and gets the job done...that's just my theory.

No one knows for sure. The "missionary" story may be apocryphal. I, for one, am a great fan of "missionary." Gets the job done.

as i understand the missionaries were apalled by the native africans propensity to mount their women fom the rear therfore they proposed that face to face intercourse was the proper method.

coz stiff overly worked muscles of soldiers could only do that easiest pose [just merely ploppin on top]
they are incapable of gumby like positions
and not limber like yogis
