My religion does pay taxes. I am a follower of Mr. Potato Headism. Don't think it has anything to do with the toy, the toy was from Mrs. Potato Head, who he divorced along time ago. She is the one that made the toy to make you believe that he was not real, and that all this was a joke. Unfortunately it is working. Less and less people seem to believe in Mr. Potato Head. But, he's real, I promise you, and you will see when you die. You don't want to be left out of the giant onion house. I mean how hard is to just believe in him, that's all he asks of you. Nothing more. And there is proof all around you that he exists. Do you think the universe could make itself, look at the complexity of the eye.
There is not ONE religion that has any more proof than Mr. Potato Headism, and yet they all laugh like it's a joke. Let's see who gets the last laugh when they all soak in his giant crock-pot.
When one lives outside of the Universe such as Mr. Potato Head, then you don't have to live by science's rules. There are no rules for him. He is God. God is Mr. Potato Head, and if you don't believe, then prove that he doesn't exist.

Most religious people do spend some money on following their religion. How about contributions to their churches, Zakat for Muslims? There are a lot of fanatics out there who pay millions to their religious groups and leaders.... so I guess the religion tax wouldn't make much of a difference. Truly religious people believe that money is secondary to salvation so they would spend as much as it takes to ensure a place in heaven.

Following a religion still costs money. This kind of tax was tried in India by one of the Muslim kings on Hindus(non Muslims) and the effect was defiance and more followers. It's like prohibition in America and what happened was bootlegging more tipplers. The aim you want to achieve can be more effective through awareness about rationality, starting from primary education and public campaigns. As such, all religions are on the decline and any attempt with penalty or a force shall give their clerics a new platform to revive their own survival in the name of that religion.

I can see by your suggestion that 'religion' is a pyramid scheme...that someone or something has turned you away from God....but God has not turned away from you...He loves you and will never stop loving you. God is not in the business of controlling people.....He will call you to Himself but you must respond in your own free will.
God hates religion. Religion is man trying to win God's favour by doing something good. God does not want your good works or money...He wants YOU......... because He loves you. He sent his PERFECT Son Jesus Christ to pay for our inability to pay for our own sin.
We have a hard time letting go of our money...because we 'worship' money. The main issue is not where the money is going but how willing are we to let go of it.

even if you're not religious it's already costing you money since religious organizations are exempt from paying taxes.
