I have a theory: my 'spirit guide' as you call it, is actually myself in the future, when I'm a 'higher consciousness', helping to direct my path in the past/present.
I believe we live in a constant state of 'NOW': past, present and future are all occurring at the same time and same instant.
Go chew on that for a while!

I believe there are spirits that help and even guide me. Perhaps some have been with me for many lives. Some are great and some are not so great. They are waiting for me to get more self and spiritually realized.
But, there are evil spirits too and if I try to hard to be sinful these evil spirits would like to control me.
They have been there all along. I can call on good spirits by being especially good.

Diane, we ALL have several spirit guides that are available to help us sort out different facets of our physical AND spiritual lives. BUT, as others have noted, having one and actively seeking it's wisdom and advice are tow different things. Many have NO idea how to even contact them, others DO but refuse to listen to the advice that they willingly share with us. The REST of us do regular meditaions to seek out their knowledge and wisdom and actualy USE that wisdom in our daily lives.
However it is NOT considered proper to discuss them with others, as their knowledge to be imparted is intended for us and us only and NOT for general consumption. OUr Spirit guides are different concepts from the concept of a totem guide, which IS actively involved in our daily lives on the mundane level. The totem is the thng that makes you avoid stepping into the street in front of a speeding car and stuff like that. The Spirit guide is totally different. they exist to help you to develop skills and abilities that your SPIRIT will need and use on the spiritual level.
There are special meditations that are intended to connect with your spirit guide. As you become more of an adept, you will leanr these, either by encountering them in your continued readings OR directly FROM those guides when they feel that you are prepared and ready to receive them.

When I was in intense study and martial arts practice I found a Teacher. Whenever i was stumped i would sit down for a few and the answers would come to me. I walked into a second hand store and found a beautiful picture of a Samarai Warrior. I meditated on my crystal ball jumped up and ran to my computer and searched for Samarai and found a similar picture, with the same armor and weaponry. His name was "Minamoto No Yoriyoshi" (988-1075) I know he was with me..I dont have that clear of a connection with a spirit guide..I wish I did..

Another very "GOOD" question! When you took your very first breath you were filled with the spirit. I know that sounds hokey. But it is nevertheless true. When you attain an adult level of maturity you begin to process worldly information in a different manner. How you are guided at that point in time tells you what "you" are now reading.

Everyone has a spirit guide, mine I have been told is a nun. They just watch you and look after you I think

Most all of us have them, but few of us hear them or bother to listen to them. They nudge you all of the time, but e tend to ignore their guidance. And that is what they are here for.
I captured my first glimpse of my spirit guide, it's essence, when I put forth the intention that I wanted to connect with my spirit guide and did a fairly simple meditation.

I was driving to work and got caught in a sudden blizzard and could not see where I was going. An owl appeared in my headlights and floated through the trees. I followed it until I descended the mountain below the cloud bank and could see the road. My totem is the Snowy Owl.
