If I put water down, he drinks the ENTIRE bowl immediately. If I fill it back up, he does the same thing. If he has water down, he won't eat his food because he'd rather drink and then his tummy gets full so I don't give him water until he is done eating. For all the other dogs I've ever had, I always made sure they had water constantly, but he drinks so much that he is constantly peeing and he is not fully housebroken yet. Is it ok to just give him a bowl of water after he eats (twice a day) and then maybe like 2 or 3 other times throughout the day?

He's been to the vet...they said he is healthy.

It really isn't a good idea to restrict water intake, especially in such active breeds as Staffys. They get dehydrated easily. There may be something wrong with him that makes it so his body doesn't deal with water properly, I’d take him to the vet to get it checked out. In the mean time, have you thought of getting an automatic water dish, the ones with the five gallon jug of water attached? Those work best for my menagerie of animals and you don't have to keep constantly refilling water dishes.

Good luck!

That's a medical condition, not just voluntary behavior. It's called PUPD and it can be due to s brain disorder, a type of diabetes, and several other physical causes.

Better take him to a vet. You need to find out the cause of this over-consumption of water.

I've always pulled up my pets water around 7pm to prevent overnight accidents.
I wouldn't restrict the water during the day though, especially if he is outside.

Has he seen a vet? He could have something medically wrong to cause him to do that.

There are many physical problems that could cause this including urinary tract infections, diabetes, kidney disease, Cushings, etc. It could also be a behavioral problem.

You need to get physical problems ruled out. Here is a list of what might be causing it:

Excess water drinking might predispose him to bloat as well although I don't think this breed is that susceptible especially when young.

If you are concerned that he is getting dehydrated without constant access to water, here are signs of dehydration:

Fill an ice cream container with water and freeze it. give him this during the night. It will keep him hydrated and keep him busy too.

excessive thirst can be a sign of diabetes. take him to a vet and have his blood sugar checked before you start restricting his water.
