I think that it might have something to do about not harassing others about what kind of food they eat. If I am not mistaken, early Christians had differing ideas about what they could and couldn't eat (some ppl following a kosher diet, others not).

Here we go ....

I Timothy 4:4-5

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Romans 14:1-4

Ro 14:1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.

3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.

4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

So, it is not what goes in the stomack that make a man unclean but what comes out of the heart.

Read about Peter's vision (or dream) in the Book of Acts.

Acts 10: 9-48
On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: and he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, and saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

And yes, you are right. In the very beginning there was much arguing over what Jewish Traditions should be retained and what should be given up. Circumcision, Clean and Unclean Foods....etc. There were some heated arguements including between Paul and Peter.
