try doing theme shots instead of just regular ones, things like eveing gowns, or out door shots sitting next to a statue,take pics in the historic buildings around your town dress up like in 20's or 50's be a pirate in a libary or a maid in the libary, well you get the idea

Anything properly composed with an appropriate background and lit well will work better, just like any photo. The subject can't be a subject without a background, so it's an important part of it. Some ideas: Unlit empty background with strong light on you, further darkening the back. Cloth draped behind you (like that "leave Brittney alone" fella). Place the light to your 10:00 or 2:00 position, slightly up. Bare bulb or with a lampshade or (safely) behind thin fabric to diffuse. Get experimental!
