Mexicans come to the USA to make money. Human rights issues are very rarely, if ever, important. The corruption, on the other hand, hurts their economy, so it does matter some, but cutting off trade agreements would just make it worse. If you want to do something that would lead to changes in Mexico to make it so that fewer people want to leave, lobby for a reduction in agricultural subsidies to American farmers. We're all paying higher taxes so the government can give farmers (i.e. wealthy landowners) money to grow corn we don't need. The farmers then can't sell this corn in the USA and dump it in Mexico, killing Mexican agriculture. The subsidies could be reduced to a level where each country grows its own corn. This would give jobs in Mexico to huge numbers of unskilled Mexicans, while, at the same time, leading to tax cuts for Americans.

We trade with China, and although we have protested abuses there we continue to trade. As a result of a bad choice in trade agreements, we have product recalls and no essential change there.
NAFTA was equally bad if not worse.
However, it is not our place to dictate their policy, anymore than it is their place to attempt to protest and dictate ours.
The better solution would be to have the weight of the UN bring pressure on Mexico for humanitarian reasons. Yet, the UN has bigger problems with other nations more abusive and oppressive without the resources that a wealthier nation like Mexico has.
We should withdraw from NAFTA and end all trade with Mexico, in hopes they would begin to do better for their people, but mainly to preserve our own national interests.
In the best interests of our country, we would also be wise to secure our borders.

We do allow human abuses in other countries, China and Africa being 2 examples. The U.S. needs to crackdown on illegal immigration, close our borders, and get our own house in order. These Trade Agreements need to be ended because they are a disaster and are exacerbating our problems in the U.S. as well. We are a mess and we need to fix us. Mexico can fix Mexico but they just will not do it.

I find it interesting that the US would put sanctions on Iraq for the same reasons regarding agreements. Only Iraqi agreements were to allow the U.N. to conduct searches for WMD's, and nuclear bi-products (waste, and plutonium) that could or would lead the US to believe that Iraq was looking to make Nuclear Weapons. And what Iraq had were to be dismantled, and disposed of. The sanctions were to put pressure on the people to get their government leader then Saddam Hussein, to cave to the demands of those U. N. agreements. Instead it starved them, and Saddam resorted to trading oil for food to feed his people.
A bigger question would be - When is America going to cleanup it's own corruption and human rights abuses towards it's own people? And I believe the US does allow human rights abuses in other countries. Especially when they can get away with it. Colombia, El Salvador, Dafur, just to name a few.

I think it is vital to the security of the country to crack down on illegal immigration. Not everyone who is crossing the border is a hard working, law abiding person. There are violent offenders, drug dealers, and even those from other countries (some with possible ties to terrorism) crossing the Mexican Border. We all should demand that the government cracks down on illegal immigration. We can address the issue of what to do with the illegals already here once we secure our borders.
I do support economic sanctions against Mexico if they continue to fail to act on this matter.
We should continue to embrace immigrants entering our country LEGALLY while doing everything we can to monitor who enters.

Because our politicians are idiots that buy into the excuses "well we're trying to clean thing up but it's to hard" Even when the excuses are coming from the same people ho are profiting from the corruption. Add to the fact that there are many on our side of the border who are profiting as well.

THis is what I got from Golden's link.
The SPP is based on the principle that our prosperity is dependent on our security and recognizes that our three great nations share a belief in freedom, economic opportunity, and strong democratic institutions.
It's funny in a sick way.
I agree. I don't like telling a country what to do internally, but that doesn't mean we have to trade with them.
