I have had a new laptop with vista for about a month and then i notice that out of my 60gigs, 30 are already filled up. Right now photoshop is probably the biggest thing on here and ive installed a couple more things but none are nearly as big. Can anyone tell me a reason for this and does anyone know anything i can do to open up space like removing unnecessary stuff?

Lets See..... Windows is an idiot proof operating system and Vista is all eye candy, and idiot proof and that's what people want. including yourself. thats why you bought a new laptop with Vista pre-installed on it.

90% of people don't know how to install or setup an operating system and that includes computer manufactures employees. they insert the CD/DVD into the drive and let it do the work, there by it installs anything and everything, where by it takes up half of the hard drive space with unnecessary software,

Now Tomasthanes came out with a statement saying Mac and Linux where also bloated operating systems, so it shows he too is unable to install any operating system be it Windows, XP/Vista, Mac OS/X or Linux. You see you can pick what software packages you would like to have installed.and as for systems 5 or 8 years ago they did not have the memory todays computers have,

It all boils down to learning the operating system and how to install it as you want it

So installing any operating system the idiot proof way you get everything installed

Absolutely! Remove Windows vista altogether, and install Ubuntu linux.
Most of vistas size is in all the good looking graphiics components and idiot proof user interface. It is not an efficient operating system. If you want to get the most of your PC you would be better to use something simpler but smarter, like linux or .nix variant.
You will still be able to run most of the software you have now, but without all the virus complications and stress on your machine due to lack of space etc.
30 gig is too much.... I am running ubuntu on a 8 year old 933 mhz with 20 gig HD, OS takes up (at most)2 gig, it runs all my developer software, and goes like a rocket.

Because, like most modern Intel/AMD operating systems, it's bloated. Because it's a Microsoft product, it's leading the pack of bloated operating systems. Even Linux and Mac OS X are bloated compared with OSs 5-8 years ago.

If you did a default install of Photoshop (or Microsoft Office or ...), you probably ended up with alot of software/programs/features that you don't need and will never use. I tend to do custom installs and only install what I need. If I find I need a feature later on, I go back and install it at that point.

Also, make sure that your hard drive is defragged, especially if you just installed alot of software. Installing software actually copies lots of files during the process which get cleaned up at the end of the install, however they leave the hard drive fragmented like crazy.
