No. At one point, it might have had the ability if the collaboration between Sony and Toshiba had gone through, but since Sony and Toshiba both went their separate ways, Sony probably reverted the PS3 back to Blu-ray technology.
If Blu-ray was able to play HD-DVD or vice versa, LG wouldn't charge so much for the Blu-ray and HD-DVD hybrid player.

The PS3 doesn't have the hardware to play HD-DVD's because it has a built in Blu-Ray drive. But the PS3 does have the capability to play HD-DVD's IF a HD-DVD drive were put in it because it is such an advaced console, but that won't happen because Sony uses Blu-Ray technology.

Nope, sorry. As designed by Sony, it will only allow Sony. So we are only talking about Blu-Ray. No HD-DVD. Hence the X-BOX 360 for that, or just buy a player now. The prices have come down a bit.

PS3 can only play BD, but not sure if in the future a new firmware can give it the capable of reading of HD-DVD's.
