If using a vaporizer, or humidifier, please make sure that the room is warm. Otherwise that steam/humidity, which is beneficial, will condense on every surface, dampening everything and providing a breeding ground for molds.
Also air the room throughly, open windows during the day, ensure cross ventilation if you can (open door oppisite the windows).
Personally I have always used the Vaporizer, but not all the time. Once the little one's condition clears, don't continue to use it. Otherwise they might become too dependent on the moistened air and that can cause troubles in itself.

Either is fine but I think vaporizers are for colds etc, it's important that it is warm mist and not cool. I can't quite remember why, but I'm sure you can look it up if you really want/need to know. But I read in "What To Expect When Expecting" and in "What To Expect The First Year" that a humidifier/vaporizer was important and that it should be warm and use water. Babies need the moisture in the air. I wouldn't worry about mold at all. Just be sure to put it in a safe place where it won't get played with or knocked over.

I have a cool mist humidifier that I use. This is especially good when a child has a cold. For general humidity, a tabletop humidifier might be best. Be sure to get one you can clean. There are solutions you can put in them to inhibit the growth of bacteria and other solutions to clean them. The smaller ones are much easier to clean than the bigger ones. You can also get humidifiers that attach to forced air furnaces. There are so many selections it's hard to make up your mind. To avoid the high humidity that would cause mold growth, make sure you have good air circulation. Don't run a humidifier in a closed room. I have a hygrometer that is marked for the percentage of humidity and shows you what the comfort zone is.

I think the air circulation is one of the most important things, though.

Cool mist vaporizer is the one to get. :) My daughter, born with cleft lip/palate, is very prone to sinus infections, ear infections, upper resp things... and we've had a cool mist vaporizer for her room since she was tiny.

The ones that use heat are the ones that can cause mold.

we used a cool mist humidifier with my son---it helped with the stuffy nose..the key to not letting it get moldy and such, is to change the water everyday and flip the filter...I dont remember the name of the humidifier we have, but we paid about $20 for it and the filters cost about $4 ( we got this at walmart)

check out this link and it explains the difference between the two

MDs usually suggest humidifiers for chidren under 3. You can get a cool mist humidifier for upper respritory problems. Walgreens has a pretty good one! I got mine about 1 year ago...but I'm sure they still have something similar to it.

We always used Vaporizer in our son's room when he was congested. You can actually even put couple drops of Vicks into the water as well. (they recommend it for two years and up, but in much bigger amount, but if you put just couple drops, it will help clear the baby up)

when i asked our pediatrician about this he said not to use a vaporizer because they can harbor bacteria because of the warm air and water.

so i would go with a humidifier.
i had to set mine on something otherwise it left mold spots on the carpet.

im pretty sure they all work very similar.. depending on the size of the tank will depend on how long it will run.. just make sure its not aimed at furniture or anything because it will take the finish off, and could cause mold.
