My 3 yr old son started to hit himself in the head and pretty much everywhere else on his body about 3 months ago. Around the same time his daddy left out for deployment. His daddy is back now but he still does it. He only hits himself when he gets mad (like when he doesn't get his way). He'll also throw himself down and bang his head on something and go ouch and start to cry. I am ignoring the behavior but he still does it.

This is a fairly common behavior. It can be dangerous if it were to continue for a long time. The best way to modify this would be to give your son a quick paddle on the fanny, then ignore him. You want to punish the dangerous behavior, but not reward him with inappropriate attention. He will drop this behavior quickly if you are consistent. You must be very cool and decisive with this approach - no lectures, no tears, no yelling.

A friend had the same problem with her 2 yr. old and was able to correct the behavior in 3 days.

consistent with probability attempt to retrain him with a replace habit? First prepare telling him the observe no in case you're gently protecting his hands down. Doing this each and on a daily basis for awhile will start to disassociate that observe together with his habit. you will be able to as nicely make it a interest. Use different words quite of NO. "Please provide up' or 'do no longer'. Then have him supply help to choose on a clean thank you to respond to NO. once you hear 'No' do this. some thing like consistent with probability squeeze his fists tight or close his eyes tight. in many situations a small advantages is sturdy motivation. some thing he particularly likes. A sticky label? One M&M candy? One skittle? this might take a little time yet each and on a daily basis interest to the retraining must be the respond.

Have yo ever talked to his doctor about this habit?.This could lead to head injuries .

I used to know a little boy that got mad and would slam his head down on the surface . Even concrete . If I saw him I would place my hand between his head and the concrete before he hit
