There are THREE main components you’ll need to know for attaining a fit midsection:
CARDIO + AB EXERCISES + PROPER DIET
Cardio exercises are the best, not crunches. Ab crunches tone and give you definition, but cardio (jogging, aerobics, etc.) burn the fat that is hiding your abs. This is not to say don’t do ab exercises, but to make sure you incorporate the proper training so you won’t be wasting your time & energy. You need to get your body fat percentage down to about 10%. Follow these strict guidelines:
A.) Do one hour of cardio a day, DAILY.
B.) Train your abs about 4-5 times out of the week. Do exercises that focus on EACH part of your midsection:
The Upper Abs
The Lower Abs
The Obliques (side abs)
Check out these sites that provide great ab exercises...A good idea would be to print out these pages for easy reference:

C.) Eat a diet consistent of fat-burning foods...Foods that are high in protein and fiber, and low in fat and sugar. To see what types of foods you should eat, check out this page: http://www.flat-stomach-exercises.com/fat-burning-foods.html
D.) DRINK 8 glasses of water a day! It cannot be stressed enough how important water consumption is for maintaining a healthy body.
E.) Lastly, having PATIENCE and a POSITIVE mental attitude is really key to reaching your fitness goals...It takes a good six to eight weeks to see noticeable results. Take good care of yourself!!

Be prepared to always be hungry. You have to make some BIG changes to your diet. Abs are probably 80% diet, 20% exercise.
If it feels like you have abs, chances are its your diet.
High protein, low fat...you probably already know all that already....

great abs are made in the kitchen not in the gym.
the only way to see the entire abdominal wall with out flexing is to have much lower than average body fat. for males this means going down to usually single digit body fat. if you already have low body fat and the abs still do not shine through then you need to increase the size of them by using resistance.
you only need to train the abs 3x a week when done properly...
