He is only two months old...I wouldnt be switching food on him for some time. Puppy food is made differently than adult food. You want him to "be all he can be?" Keep him on a high quality puppy food. I am using Innova because these days with all the problems with animal food getting even worse, it is an all natural food, no dead, diseased or dying...which is what "meat or animal by-products" means. YUCK. I have heard of Nutro, and it is a good food. Expensive, but if you feed good food, they eat less cause its not all fillers, they poop less, and it stinks less...and your puppy gets all the nutrition it needs to grow to be a healthy adult.

Canidae is a much better food then Nutro...go ahead and make the switch but do it gradually over a period of at least a week.

A good quality All Life Stages food such as Canidae will give your puppy all the nutrition he needs.

I can see there is a whole lot of misinformation when it comes to food and feeding puppies/dogs.

******** Jordan, be aware that ANY food has the potential to cause an allergic reaction...some pets have various sensativities to some things, so NO food, not even the very best can be guaranteed not to cause a reaction ******

Nutro is a good food. I would keep him on it, and follow what the vet says. There is nothing wrong with canidae, but it is hard to think about what "all life stages" means in a dog food. Puppies need more vitamins, and nutrients than an adult dog or a senior dog. it is essential to growth. To put a puppy on a food that has nutrients for all stages means that he actually may not be benefitting from the food as much as we would like to think. I know a lot of people who use canidae, and it is a very good food. You might want to consider switching your pet over once he reaches adulthood (1 year or so). If you do decide to swtich over, do it slowly over the period of about 1 week. Switching over to a new food fast can cause gastric upset and diahrrea. Good luck!

Nutro is a very good food. It is all natural and doesn't contain a lot of the allergens other foods do (such as wheat) that can be hard on a puppies stomach. You also don't have to feed your dog the large quantities other brands require. I would follow your vets advice.
If you do decide to switch, make sure to do it slowly, by adding a little of the new food every day until your dog is completely switched over. Sudden switches can cause constipation or diarrhea.

Actually, Nutro is NOT a good food.....Canidae is WAY better...
I was feeding Nutro and my dogs coats felt waxy, had and odor and they would vomit bile...
Go to rateitall.com and read the reviews, also epinions.com
Canidae is a great food and I would definitely switch....now!

Google dog food analysis and you will see

myself....I would never feed a food that has ever had a recall either....lots of dogs suffered in that recall

You will really see a difference once you switch...

Just be sure to transition over time as you do not want to upset his stomach since he is so young.

Nutro Ultra puppy foods is one of the best brands out there. Switching foods on a puppy at an early age is not recommended as you might create stomach issues on a developing , growing dog. Canidae contains two "questionable" ingredients, yucca schidigera and herring meal.

Yucca is a natural herb used to reduce the odor of a dogs stool. It is suspected, though not yet proven, that by using this ingredient over an extended period of time it might interfere with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins, resulting in nutrient deficiencies. But by using Canidae All Life Stages Formula for short periods of time, rotating its use with other foods that do not contain yucca, it would seem to make an acceptable addition to any dogs diet.

On the other hand the herring meal used in this product is of a more serious concern. All fish that is caught and marked for use as a food product is regulated by the U.S. Coast Guard. By their regulations any fish destined to become fish meal must be treated with the artificial preservative ETHOXYQUIN. Ethoxyquin is a known carcinogen. Therefore foods containing fish meal of any kind can be suspected of containing this deadly ingredient unless the manufacturer explicitly states otherwise.

During puppyhood, it's really best not to switch the foods unless necessary. Nutro Ultra is a good brand. Now, once he's a year old, you can switch him, slowly, to Canidae, because his stomach won't be as sensitive to change, as it is when he's 2 months old.

Most vets know very little about the different types of dog food out there. They're the ones pushing Science Diet and it's full of corn and all sorts of by-products and fillers. Go ahead and switch him over. Just do the change gradually over a week or so. Make the Canidae 1/4 of the food for a day or so, then go to 1/2 Canidae for a day or so, then 3/4 Canidae for a day or so.

Is your vet the one selling the nutro ultra? If so, he may be advising you to stay on it for his pocketbook. They get kickbacks just like regular mds. My vet continued to push greenies even after I told him my dog cannot digest them - he threw one up in a huge wad and some dogs have died from not being able to digest or vomit them.

Canidae is a good organic brand. Just make sure you keep your puppy on puppy food for 6-12 months, depending on his breed. Smaller breeds can switch to adult dog food sooner than large breeds.

Canidae is better. Just make a gradual change. Nutro is not the best. Dogs do not get allergic reactions from canidae.
