It depends on which translation you read. Some Bibles don't have the word in it at all.
In the OT, the Hebrew word Sheol is used to describe the grave. It is not nessesarily a place of torment. In the NT the Greek word Hades is used to descrbe the same place.
Jesus spoke of a judgment of fire that would happen on judgement day. In the Greek the word He used is Gehenna. It was a place in Isreal where garbage was burned. Jesus spoke of it figuratively. Gehenna is the lake of fire which John saw in Revelation. The lake of fire is not Hades, because Hades is thrown into the lake of fire.
The King James Version created much confusion by wrongly translating Sheol/Hades AND Genenna as Hell.

The exact location of Hell is unknown to everybody of us human beings and it is only God who could tell the location.
However you can read the word hell in the Old testament and New Testament.

The word hell is not in the origional text. Most of the terms in the Old Testament that are translated as "hell" are origionaly the Hebrew for grave.

Both, in the old testament the word sheol has two meanings. It can mean the tomb or the place of torment after death. In the new testament hell is either referred to as hell or the lake of fire and brimstone.

There are several different words used for hell in the both the old and new testament. I honestly don't remember which one are which but they are Hadees, Gehenna, Sheol, and Tartarus.

Neither, really.
"Hell" appears in the New Testament as the Apocalypse, or the unveiling of the glory of God throughout the material creation.
