As a Vietnam vet, I can sympathize with you being spat on. However, you have to remember your options and the tactics behind thier actions, and your responses. They are ignorant, leftist, ungrateful SOB's who need to be dropped into Iraq and forced to fight or die to get out, spend time with Al Quaida thugs to be "educated" as to the threat against us, and then left without hope of the Marines coming to rescue thier butts.
Here in the States, I simply kick them in the balls and ask if they care to apologize for disrespecting my service....once they can talk in a normal voice.

I am terribly sorry for your bad experiences. I think that some people do not see the necessary difference between the politicians and the soldiers.
Too often I think, civilians forget that soldiers are by and large in a job, some often love their jobs, some are waiting for their contracts to be up, but the POLITICS is totally separate and soldiers themselves may be opposed to the policies they are asked to implement, or they may be strongly supportive of them, but if you don't like a policy you don't REALLY have the opportunity to express that.
In case nobody has told you today, Thank you for your service to our country.
However to your question it's fairly simple to understand from a "rational" perspective. In the case of the current war, certain elements of the anti-war movement, hold-no-bars with respect to their level of protest. This includes violence and destruction of property as well as assaulting fellow citizens and soldiers.
I personally think this a result of being systematically disenfranchised , which has occurred in this administration. It was not long ago that liberals and anti-war folks were literally marginalized and accused of being anti-patriotic.
Some of the more extreme elements took this to heart and are gone too far.
There are those who might suggest this is a particularly liberal phenomenon, but I suspect that there are possible policies and actions a liberal congress or president could take that would cause conservatives to attack at the focus of their hatred.

I have some doubts about your story. We're not in the 1970's anymore, and anybody spitting on a soldier today would quickly get arrested, especially with airport security being as tight as it is. The Vietnam vets may have had to put up with that crap, but nowadays you could have easily had those punks charged with assault and possibly even with "vandalizing government property". Maybe there are some wackos who hate soldiers, I don't know, but it seems to me that with this war it's only the politicians who are getting the blame from the public.

That can be answered in one word. Ignorance! Not all soliers agree with the war in fact alot of my friends that are soliers agree we should not be there. Hello people when you are in the military you can not just quit the job. You are called G.I. gor a reason, it means Government Issue. Once you sign hose papers your behind belongs to Uncle Sam. If you go AWOL (absent with out leave) there are real cosiquinses. You get court marshalled and have to stand trial in a military court you face serious jail time. Not only that you get a dishonorable discharge that can prevent future employment. We have to have soldiers, otherwise this country would fall. So even though I completely feel Iraq was a mistake I still fully support our troops and encourage all others to join me in the effort.

No matter what you are, you can't expect everyone to just like you. Don't think that being a soldier grants you some kind of elite status in society.
Still, what happened to you was probably wrong, was it possibly an accident?

I don't get it either. I am very proud of our military and honor them at every opportunity. I want to thank you for your service to our Country and apologize for their bad manners. The problem is that there are many like Michael Moore, Barbra Streisand and her idiot husband who talked last week on the radio by saying, "Happy 9-11!" (Can you imagine??) Chuckie Schumer, Harry Reed, Joe Bidan and many, many others continue to bash our military and the job that is being done. Hillary and Bill Clinton despise the military and even went so far as to ban them from coming into the White House while they were in uniform; they destroyed the Secret Service and the CIA (my relative worked there at the time). Then there is the Hollywood crowd who constantly bash and belittle our men and women in uniform; the press, who continually lie about our progress in Iraq (my nephew is there and tells a true story of what is being done.) All of this false information which is put out and the antiAmerican and anti-military sentiment by the left is what is causing this type of reaction. I am from a military family and appreciate all that our soldiers are doing. I am proud of your service to keep us safe. I respect General Petraeus, who spoke of the strides that have been made and whose honorable service has been belittled and ridiculed by too many. How dare the NY Times print such lies and give MoveOn a platform to send out their venom! How dare anyone spit on you!! There is no decent explanation for this crude and disgusting behavior. Please know that there are many who are proud of you and your fellow military brothers and sisters. Thank you for your service! God bless our soldiers and God help America!
