Example: There is no scientific proof that heaven exists.

"Well I have faith that it exists."

JC - What you are describing is probability. The probability is that you won't get in a car crash. Faith that it won't happen is irrelevant and plays no part in the scheme of things.

What I'm trying to get at is that "faith" is used to fill in the holes that cannot be answered.

Why do you believe in God? Because you have faith that he exists.

Johnny B - I'm agnostic, but I disagree with you. The world NEEDS religion. People need to be able to believe in something. I think the finality of death without an afterlife would be too much for most people to grasp. A lack of religion would also remove the carrot from the proverbial stick.
Also, although yes, Religion has played a large role in human violence, it HAS did much good as well in humanitarian channels.

Paulie - How so? Wouldn't the burden of proof lie with those stating that their view is correct? You say there is a God, the burden of proof lies with you, not I.
You say "Bob" hit you on the head with a bat. The burdon of proof lies with you, not I. Catch my drift?

Could be, but this could also fairly be applied to the alterantive.
Ex. There is no scientific proof that life came about by chance, but I have faith that, because 'most scientists' say that it did , I will submit to their strong assertions by reason of, 'who am I, to stand up to these browbeating men'?

Many scientific organisations including the National Academy of Science state that a God may have been involved in the organisation of the Universe. There's no scientific proof a crutch exists. Edit: In response to one of your comments. Do you not also believe that your position is the correct one. So why isn't the burdon then shared equally. The role religion has to play in violence is a separate question from the one you posed but I should add atheists have had more than their share in violence. The communists weren't theists and they slew millions.

Faith is the confidence in your own heart. Is it not? Do you believe that you need a Heaven to be a good person? Or a Hell to justify bad behavior? Religion can sometimes be used to justify our guilt or our praise.

But reality is that you are who you are. You learn and develop through life experiences. It shapes your spirit and determines what you will become after this life time.

The light in your soul is not judged by God. It is judged by you and others. You and others are the same. That is why we need Faith to play the game.

Heaven is when we live our lives in greatest joy. Doing the things that bring out the best in ourselves. This elevates the Universal consciousness and feeds the loving energy of creation.

Confidence in your higher good can give you unbelievable power allowing you to help others and to expand their way of life. Without faith, our human civilization would end. Without caring, there would be nothing but hate.

The higher your love energy rises the higher your soul will soar in your spiritual consciousness. Your level of development is determined by your experiences and your higher spirit.

Without faith you have no human soul. You are lost in the void. Don't let the darkness consume you. Rise above the darkness and find the light which is your home.

Firstly; "No scientific proof" - implying that science has all of the answers. Try rephrasing with science employs quite a few "educated" guesses - guesses none-the -least !
Although "faith" can be misused as a cop-out, Faith is not a "crutch" for the converted. The crutch you mention is very prevalent in society. To supply you with an example. "Crutches" are used by billions on this earth such as, money, booze, drugs, sex, homes, careers, work-aholics, cars, intellectualism, education, food, movies, music, etc., etc., - these are some of the biggest "crutches" around !!!

Faith and Religion is just a man made creation that was devised by poor people. It has continued through the brainwashing of their children and then separated through different peoples into their specific own styles and wants. Religions and gods were in most cases just created to justify mans own inadequacies.

The world would be a better place without any religions and gods whatsoever.
The Bible and all other religions have only fueled hate and wars from the time of all their inceptions. As long as there are religions there will be wars.
There is not one good thing that has ever come from religion.
Its always resulted in someone having to die.

A crutch is something you lean against because you are weak, and I am sure that religion/faith is that to some.

For me, my faith is a walking stick: I use it to get through the hard parts, and always have it with me, but without it I could still hold myself up.

That, and I am a Master of BS. If it is unexplainable or unknown, I could simply make up an answer, and continue on.

There are so many things that cannot be known or proven about the universe. Faith is a powerful force that allows people to act with courage in the face of a great unknown.

Only sometimes that's true. Real, living dynamic faith is based on an intelligent effort - it propels you forward almost hand in hand with hope. Like knowing someone well enough to believe in them in situations that you've never encountered before... like I know my husband would stop and help if he saw an accident...that's having faith in him as a person. Having faith in God is having faith in Who He Is.

I wouldn't limit faith to being something that simply defines believing in the existence of a god. You can have faith in anything, for instance I have faith in myself or that I will wake up tomorrow morning.

Eh... I guess it really depends on the person. I love science and truly believe that scientists know what they are talking about. At the same time, I also believe in a "higher power". I believe God is just allowing us to live our lives and he doesn't intervene. I believe that whenever someone says "God saved my life," that they would've been saved regardless. God is just the observer and if it wasn't for him 'observing,' we wouldn't even exist. God created everything, and science just explains how he did it.
