Folklore has it that the original cook forgot to put the baking powder in the chocolate cake mix and thus made the first Brownies. So, that's probably the start. But I do know there is definitely less flour in brownies than in a chocolate cake.

A brownie has a higher density and lower moisture content. It's similar and chemically the same thing, but it "eats" different. The varieties of chocolate cake are vast. A Brownie is always a brownie.

Well, it kind of really is a chocolate cake - but thicker and fudgier - you don't put any "rising agent" in it like baking powder or a "self raising" flour so it stays flatter and denser. A cake is expected to rise and be fluffy.
That's why brownies are SO GOOD!!

The texture for one, the taste for two. You can make brownies into cake-like. Brownies are more dense, chewy and gooey. Cakes are more moist and softer in texture.

in a brownie you use baking powder as a levener...in a chocolate cake you use baking soda....it helps make it light. That is the only difference between the 2.

Way more proportion of egg in the batter and way less flour. Ends up more like a cookie dough than a cake batter.
